Of course Fox and American Idol won the TV ratings race last night, but the Tuesday results boosted the "Daylight Savings Time Killed My Show" meme again, as the broadcast ratings losses were widespread.
The night's dominant show, American Idol, suffered less than most, down just 2% from last week to an 8.0 adults 18-49 rating. For the Idol fans keeping track at home, the show's down just 6% season to date in the important adults 18-49 ratings. So much for missing Paula.
ABC's Lost fell yet again, down 10% from last week to a season low, and tied for a regular episode series low, 3.8 adults 18-49 rating. The FlashForward clip show at 10pm scored just a 1.6 rating, although I don't think that's particularly predictive of what will happen on Thursday's new episode return.
CBS suffered from the sunburn (or meme-burn) too. NCIS was down 11% to a season low 3.4 adults 18-49 rating. NCIS:LA fell 9% from last week to a 3.2 rating, and The Good Wife was down 4% to a 2.7 adults 18-49 rating.
NBC forgot the sunscreen too, as Biggest Loser was down 10% to a season low 2.7 rating. Parenthood, which I was pretty sure could save itself, fell 12% to a new low with a 2.3 adults 18-49 rating.
Somehow, the CW shows escaped the general downdraft. 90210 was up 12% to a 0.9 adults 18-49 rating, while Melrose Place rose 20% to a still squinty small 0.6 adults 18-49 rating. More on the CW target demos later.

Definitions:
*Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.
Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)
Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

Idol substantially down from 25.77 million viewers and a 9.5/25 rating/share among adults 18-49 on the first night of the finals last year. FlashForward fortunate to be returning against basketball tomorrow night instead of CBS' regular Thursday lineup. Parenthood again had little competition but could not manage to pull a decent rating, down further from last week's 2.6. Will this show get back over 3? Unlikely… The Biggest Loser is way down from 8.27 million viewers and a 3.2/8 rating/share A18-49 last week.
NCIS got smacked last night, but LA held on reasonably well.
It's looking less and less likely that Parenthood will even be saving itself.
NO NCIS is down. An other Season low. Whats happening? The Season premiere had a 4.8 in the demo.
The real news of the day for NBC is not Parenthood, but instead the paltry numbers for The Biggest Loser.
Those 9pm numbers should be 8pm numbers, and has BL ever sunk so low in its first hour?
Parenthood is a lesson to TV producers. You can't buy good ratings with a famous cast and Olympic marketing saturation.
After seeing those biggest Loser numbers the 1.9 for Chuck makes sense. Man that is bad for the BL. Does anyone watch TV at 8 anymore.
I think the bigger lesson here is you can't have a great, big cast on a network that nobody watches and expect good ratings. Comparably Parenthood is no worse than most shows airing currently on NBC. It's performing about where everything else is. Just not enough people tune into NBC right now. They need a big breakout hit or two to attract more viewers consistantly to the network and not just for big events like the olympics or football. In the mean time they should stick with the shows of quality and hope that increased viewers on the network will equate out to the individual shows doing better.
BTW…love the upgrade in sun pictures. haha
*sighs* I was hoping that Melrose would rise… i guess it is good bye! This sucks though, it is a really good show!
Kiss Parenthood goodbye.
Comparing the first three weeks of Parenthood to the first 3 weeks of Chuck:
Parenthood's first three weeks (3 episodes)
1st episode: 3.1 (? share, 8.1M viewers)
2nd episode: 2.6 (? share, 6.4M viewers)
3rd episode: 2.3 (6 share, 5.9M viewers)
Compared to the first three weeks of Chuck this season (5 episodes)
1st episode: 3.0 (7 share, 7.7M viewers)
2nd episode: 2.9 (7 share, 7.2M viewers)
3rd episode: 2.6 (7 share, 7.4M viewers)
4th episode: 2.5 (6 share, 6.7M viewers)
5th episode: 2.5 (6 share, 7.0M viewers)
Question: Is there any chance that Melrose Can be saved at this point??
Does anyone watch TV at 8 pm? Uhh yeah. Tons of people do. On a regular Tuesday this season, Idol will pull 20+ million viewers there and NCIS fairly close behind with close to 20 million viewers. Tuesday 8 pm has been one of the most watched hours of broadcast TV this season.
Zero.
Comparably Parenthood is no worse than most shows airing currently on NBC. It's performing about where everything else is.
It's comparable to the rest of NBC despite the huge marketing push. They Olympics were all about Parenthood. If you drive down Santa Monica in West Hollywood, every single bus stop has a Parenthood ad, block after block, with billboards above. NBC didn't go cheap with their marketing, which adds to the price tag on a show that is only able to do about what their others shows are doing.
The 2.3 for Parenthood was consistent for both hours and interestingly the second hour gained viewers while both shows on CBS and ABC lost viewers. Bottom line is Idol is hurting Loser as a lead in, but Loser is still gaining every half hour in demo and total viewers.
I think the CW learned it's lesson with Melrose this season. Their pilot offerings for next season sound actually pretty good for the CW. Melrose is dead and we can all be thankful.
Parenthood just needs a better time slot – 10pm is way too late for a family show during the week. This is too good of a show to get cancelled.
And Parenthood's competition is much weaker to boot. Looks doomed.
I'm not here to defend but everything is down. Even Idol is down from last year. It's spring and people just have more options on TV these days and a lot of alternate viewing methods. Ratings will just continue to drop.
I'm glad The Good Wife held. Wonderful episode last night. Juliana Marguiles continues to impress and DVR'd Parenthood and was disappointed in it last night. I'm not a fan of schmaltz and the ending was just that. Not a fan of Peter Krause, he's actually my fave character on the show along with Erika Christensen's character.
But for the Parenthood fans, did anyone really expect this show to take when the 1990 version with actors like Ed Begley Jr., Thora Birch, and Leo DiCaprio failed? I don't hate the show but it's just ok. No replacement for Friday Night Lights.
Lost sad to see dropped but it never disappoints.
Frank I'm not sure Parenthood is gone. I think NBC has too much invested in it and might give it a shot in another timeslot.
Seems like the networks are all dropping by the same amount. I don't mean percentages. NBC is losing 0.3-0.4 on the ratings of each show. And that's probably the drop across the board. Even Idol is down about 0.2 in the ratings.
Now if every show takes that hit from Daylight savings time, then Chuck's drop, Human Target's drop tomorrow (it will be a 2.0/2.1 tomorrow, guaranteed), Parenthood's, New Adventures of Old Christine, or any other bubble show's drop, should be expected by the networks.
Which means if you see a greater drop than 0.4/0.5, THAT merits a lot of alarm. That's the one to be concerned about. If Grey's tanks to a 3.3 or 3.2 instead of a 3.7, then it's news.
