Flash Forward: Will Long Hiatus Impact FlashForward's Nielsen Ratings?

March 18th, 2010

After a three and a half month hiatus, FlashForward returns tonight with a two hour installment between 8p-10p.

When it last aired on December 3, 2009 it averaged a 2.1 rating (2.794 million) with adults 18-49 and 7.068 million viewers between 8p-9p.

Tonight it will air against repeats on FOX,  new episodes of NBC's two hour Thursday comedy block and NCAA Basketball on CBS.

Shows don't usually have such long hiatuses so it is hard to predict the outcome.  I wouldn't be surprised if it came in about the same as the Decmeber episodes, but given the ratings carnage at ABC in general, I also wouldn't be all that surprised if it dropped down into the mid 1.x range especially as it will have to hold people's attention for 2 hours.  I tried to watch the screener of tonight's episode, got distracted after about 5 minutes (some pretty cool special effects are in the opening scene though) and never went back to it.  The DVR will grab it tonight, and sooner or later I'll have to decide whether to watch or delete.  I'll for sure be watching the basketball tonight.

Anything above a 2.2 would surprise me at least a little and a 2.5 or higher would downright shock me.  I'm predicting a 1.8 adults 18-49 rating and 6.4 million viewers.

What do you think?

Let me see – three and a half months off and against march madness?. Maybe a 1.7, and a place in ABC's “How To Kill A Show” HOF along with Life on Mars and soon V ..

  2. The hiatus probably is going to hurt the ratings like all The CW shows that went on hiatus in December and returned in March.

  3. JFrick

    5.342 million viewers, 1.7 18-49.

    Let's be generous… 2.0

I personally think the network handled the break badly. This show is Sooooo very tedious. Should have gotten to the meat earlier than the Dec. 3rd episode. Audience was confused when hiatus came, wonder if it will be back to find out what happeden?

It was already losing steam when it went on hiatus, and at this point i would think that the rest of the “casuals” have moved on. I said 1.8 a couple of days ago and i am sticking to it

it'll do crappy, but I'll still watch it online later. I do want to see how this all plays out. With half the season/series over, there is absolutely nothing known about what caused the blackouts at all.

Agree, about 18-49: 1.8 but a little above in viewers : 7 million

    2.4

I think we all agree that it's going to tank. I think the biggest question is will ABC keep in in this timeslot or will they switch it with something else? Maybe they could move it to Mondays at 10 and try Castle on Thursdays at 8? Castle may benefit from an 8PM timeslot, and it would give ABC an idea of how Castle can do without a big lead-in. The same idea could be used for Brothers & Sisters instead of Castle.

If that were to happen I would rather them move FF to Wednesday at 10 to burn it off, and try launching Happy Town out of either DH, or DWTS, but I think that's a little too much schedule shuffling for ABC to stomach. (It's not that I think Happy Town will be a great show, it's just the last one hour drama they have left to premiere.)

I really don't think ABC will be doing anything other than sticking to what they have, and if they want to stay in a dead heat for 4th place this season they should leave it as is.

2.0 but with ugly decay inside the hour.

  12. CJ_Shizzle

I'll guess 2.0 to 2.3; likely a 2.3 since it is the first new ep in 3 months, so people will be wanting to check it out.

  13. I guess around 2.0 for the 1st hour and 1.7 or less for the 2nd.
I hope ABC will cancel this crappy show.

  14. Fin16

I guess a 2.0 for the first half hour and a 1.9 for the second.

  15. Stefan

I say, 2.0 for the first hour, 1.6 for the second hour (avg. 1.8). This show's a goner. V, on the other hand, will probably pull through.

I agree with Tommy about the schedule reshuffling, but not for Castle because it has yet to be renewed for a third season, so maybe after that. But hopefully they'll do something about Happy Town, because otherwise it's doomed.
I know it seems weird that I'm sticking up for the show that hasn't even premiered yet, but the cast is pretty good and I just know I'll love the premise. There are no more horror/mystery shows on primetime.

  16. For anyone else who cares to mention March Madness, note that CBS' regular lineup gets better ratings than the first Thursday of March Madness last year.

  17. MrBlueEyes

2.2 with 7 million total viewers.

  18. Thomas

Considering a mere clip show of it got a 1.6 tuesday, I'm expecting at least around a 2.0.

  19. cyberlarson

I thought the recap on Tuesday was well done. I hope Fiennes took some acting lessons during the hiatus.

Well, it's DST, so it's going to drop from its last showing. Figure a 1.7-1.8 and about 6.25 million viewers. That's the standard drop from DST from its last numbers. (loses 0.3/0.3 in ratings and 750k viewers, pretty much what most shows were hit with this week)

If it does the same as its last airing, that's a little better than expected, but it's still cancellation territory. If it does worse, the show has cratered.

So, Bill and Rob, if the ratings are in fact what I just guessed (1.7/1.8) please refrain from any “Flash Forward Craters” posts or any other kind of pun. Numbers around that are what you SHOULD expect based on DST effects.
