The ratings for the penultimate episode of the first half of season one are in for Caprica and Ghost in the Machine increase viewing a bit -- the best live+SD viewing since January 29.  But the adults 18-49 viewing was flat.

Next week, the mid-season finale.  Episode description below, if you don't like any spoilers at all, look away now!

“END OF THE LINE”

When Daniel (Eric Stoltz) finally sets a deadline for resetting the U-87 Cylon - and unknowingly ending Zoe-A’s (Alessandra Torresani) existence as she knows it - she makes a desperate attempt to save herself.  But when her plan backfires, she finds herself out of time and out of options.

Furious with a recent comeuppance, Barnabas (James Marsters) ignites his feud with Clarice (Polly Walker) into an all-out war.  Trapped in the middle is Lacy (Magda Apanowicz), who is forced to make a decision she may regret forever.

Daniel makes a confession to an already reeling Amanda (Paula Malcomson) that sends her over the edge.

So the 18-49 is staying steady but that's quite an overall jump. I wonder if people caught up on their DVR viewing or if they just jumped in to see what was going on?

  2. Samuel_GM

Not much, but better than nothing. Still not following though. But I wish them well

    Robert-

Thanks for acknowledging that the demo was flat, unlike other sites who just tried to hype the rise in total viewers. The context is always appreciated, even if it makes the situation seem worse for a show I like.

Seems like an upward trend even if 18-49 was flat given the live+7 info on the March 5th episode. Timeshifiting viewing is a catchy thing I think. Especially when you talk about revenue. Been that way since BSG.

My favorite show at the moment, which is why I'm so glad that people are starting to catch on.

  6. I have been severly disapointed in this series. It plays out more like a soap opera than a sci-fi series. Not only that, it is just plain boring. The whole storyline of the “40's” virtual world is total crap. It has done nothing to move the story or develop any characters. The series had such potential with the birth of the cylon race and the Adama connection to that start. I will watch this mid-season finale on Friday, but beyond that, I think its 50/50 for me to watch it again.

I don't see any real improvement in the numbers. THe show had great potential and to me they keep making it worse. The characters become more and more unlikeable. It's like they are forcing conflict where it doesn't make sense. Unlike BSG which touched on a lot of important issues, Caprica glosses over them. The Adamas to me shouldn't even be on this show and serve no purpose. I think that the actors are good but the writing is horrendous. The big difference to me between Caprica and BSG is that while flawed most of the characters on BSG were likeable and rootable. Lacy is the only one on the show that I have any sympathy for at this point.

Caprica is Da Bomb!!!! Great Show, Good Actors good Writing

GO CAPRICA…WE NEED MANY MORE SEASONS OF CAPRICA

  9. Marc

April 2nd's telcast on Friday will likely hit over 2 Million viewers for Live+SD. lol. :p

  10. I am interested in the story and as slow to develop as it seems, the Suits at the network have put the soap opera format as being more important than the storyline. I will be watching the show as long as a story (hidden as it is) is being told. The likeable characters so far are limited to the little girl Lacy with just about everyone else being made to be listed on my folks NOT to invite to my next cookout or not to meet for a drink. What Ron and Jane are doing to the characters is a mystery to me because they are approaching the bad as Stargate Universe characters which I would not have my feelings hurt if they somehow all died and were replaced. Mr Howe and Bonnie Hammer really do need some counseling if these are the characters they honestly believe folks will tune into the network to see. I mean Ghost Hunters is a strange show, but the folks on the show are ALL likeable and I have allowed the TV to stay on the network some of the days reruns were shown, but the new SighFI soapFi shows are not very much fun watching. After the mid-season final I may just lose interest in Caprica as I have with SG Universe. Mr Howe and Ms Hammer what were you thinking?

I put BSG and the canon out of my mind to let this story develop on its own but even then the pace is just terribly slow (sleepy slow) making it hard to watch even being interested in the very slowly unfolding story.

The problem with Caprica is that it is a thought-provoking, intelligent, and mature show that is running on a network that is known for offering just the opposite. With the exception of Battlestar Gallactica, most of the shows on SyFy are cheesy, juvenile, and derivative. Some of the fare is fun (Eureka), but nevertheless, light entertainment. I would admit that the show is slow at times, but I admire it in that it is trying to reach for some of the higher realms of thoughtful science-fiction

  12. Mark,

I have had read enough of the so called intelliigent thought provoking crap from folks to somehow talk down to folks that require shows that can tell a story with out all the sub human characters somehow being called normal desireable or even possible. God help you if these kinds of charatcers are what populate YOUR life

    To allencharlesreport–

Sorry to anger you. But you have misread my comments and made assumptions about me that are wrong. I made not comment on whether or not I considered the characters to be “normal” or not, nor did I give or imply my definition of what “normalcy” is. You know nothing about me or my life. I was not talking down to or attempting to criticize anyone; especially folks like you. The anonymity of the internet enables you to spew venom towords me. THAT behavior does say something about you. I WAS criticizing many of the shows on SyFy network and would extend that criticism to most of what passes for science fiction in the media. Most of what passes for sci fi is simply a vehicle for mindless action. If that is what you like to watch, by all means, be my guest. A show like Caprica attempts much more and deserves some praise for attempting to do so; although I would admit that the show is not that great, but it is not crap.

All that said, I think Caprica is a fantasy show. It is not trying to imply that the characters are “normal” or desireable. However, Charles, if you had a wife or girlfriend that looked like Polly Walker or Paula Malcolmson, I think that you would be doing OK in your life.

This week's episode was the best one yet. I think the show is finally reaching the level of intensity Battlestar had, but unfortunately it is true that it's come at the cost of the likeability of some characters. I still want it to be renewed though, and the low ratings are a shame.

  15. This series has been a very pleasant surprise; Ron Moore has cranked up another winner.

  16. If this show gets cancelled I'll be right behind Amanda. Frack-yeah!
