Update Friday 5:20pm PT: Fox confirms this is the last season of 24.
Update: and now Mary Lynn Rajskub (Chloe) has tweeted that this is 24's last season.
Is this season the end, at least in terms of a regular series for Jack Bauer and 24? Yes, it appears it is. Still no official word from the network, but look for that by Monday if not sooner.

Original post.
If you're a tea leaf reader, 24 is done, NBC passed, and FOX won't be renewing it. First comes a story from the New York Times' Brian Stelter that says time is running out for Jack Bauer:
For Fox, the show’s trademark clock is about to stop ticking. Nearly a decade after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that so heavily influenced people’s perceptions of the show, Fox is planning to cancel it. The current season, its eighth, will be its last.
Then there's a tweet from Jon Cassar who worked on the show for the first 7 seasons:
Jon Cassar who worked on 24 for days 6 and 7 as a producer and on the series much longer in other capacities tweets that the news from the set is the show has been canceled. For anyone who can't see the above image, the text reads:
News from the 24 set,the crew has been told that 24 has come to an end. There will b no season 9. Its been a great run, thanx all 4 watching

Sad but saw it coming, end of a great show
It definitely seems like it's time for it to go, hopefully it can improve before the end of the Season and go out on a high note.
Good. All 24 ever did was promote torture.
Kiefer Sutherland said in an interview that Fox had been wanting the 24 cast/crew to make a 24 theatrical movie, but that they haven't because it's too much work to make a TV show and a movie at the same time. Now they can go do that and make a great thriller.
It's time and it really has been for a couple of years. I'm a faithful 24 watcher and there have been things I have hated about the show at times but it always was entertaining. The last couple of years just has seemed like it's been running on fumes. I hope the show gets some decent closure. But have they taped the last show yet? I guess no NBC but now as someone mentioned they'll probably make that movie which will end up being wildly successful.
8 seasons is a great run for any show.
24 was a groundbreaking show that changed the way TV shows are made. I wish the networks would look at what Fox did with 24 in running the show with no repeats all season.
As for the torture statement, that is just ridiculous. I am tired of the show getting ripped for it's storylines. There is never pleasing everyone.
It's its time to go. It's been a great run and even though I have nothing against the show, I'm glad NBC passed on it – they'd probably make a mess out of it.
Now they have a chance to go out on a high note and venture over to theatrical movies. I guess this bodes well for Human Target, possibly even for Lie to Me and it opens up another spot on Fox's schedule.
Season 8 was announced to be the final season 2 years ago. So it's not really canceled as much as it has ended. I presume the movie is still on?
Really time for it to go and has been for past 2 3 seasons as its been running on fumes the pas 2 3 season.
I love 24, but I'm happy with 8 seasons, IMO most shows peak at about 4-5
Well, better news for Lie To Me fans…
I tried to get into 24, the first season was ok but dragged alot, I mean, how many times can his family be kidnapped!? haha, but got good towards the end.
The second season was good, better than the first.
Watched about 20 mins into the 3rd, stopped and haven't gone back for months (since I started the Sopranos haha).
24 has just been officially canceled.

Is this really a surprise? They said it was going to be the final season and were going to move 24 onto the big screen. So really expected this.
considering how they ran this show into the ground years ago, im stunned it lasted this long.
I wonder how big the finale will be. And how well a movie would actually do? X-Files (the first one) got 84 mil.
I feel kind of sad even though I stopped watching last season. I thought it was a great show for the six full seasons that I watched. Just seemed to go downhill for me last season.
Kinda sad considering it has given us so many hours of entertainment, but it was time. It will go down together with LOST as one of the best shows ever. Speaking of LOST, that show ends that show ends May 23 and then this May 24, that's kinda odd
And NBC please DON'T pick it up, let it go with some dignity left
