Free of the NFL Draft, most broadcast primetime shows enjoyed a recovery from last Thursday on the first night of May sweeps, as Survivor again lead a CBS ratings win on the night. ABC's Flash Forward didn't join in the rebound though, falling 6% from last week to a 1.5 adults 18-49 rating, and was again beaten in that rating by the CW's Vampire Diaries.

CBS recovered across the board although not to brag worthy levels in the later hours, as Survivor was up 11% vs. last week to a 4.0 adults 18-49 rating, and was the top rated show of the night. CSI was up 7% to a 3.0 rating, and The Mentalist was up 7% to a 3.2 rating.

After the dip from Flash Forward, ABC was in recovery mode as well, Grey's Anatomy was up 9% to a 3.8 rating vs. its last original on 4/1. Private Practice was up 15% to a 3.0 rating from its last regular timeslot original on 4/1.

Coming off several season lows from last week, NBC's trends were mostly up, although its absolute numbers in many cases were still weak. Community rose 25% from last week to a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating, and Parks & Recreation matched it at a 2.0 rating, flat vs. its last original episode on 3/25. The Office was up 13% from last week's season low to a 3.6 rating, and 30 Rock increased 16% from last week to a 2.9 rating. The Marriage Ref recovered by 5% vs. last weeks series low to a 2.0 rating.

Fox didn't join in the overall updraft on Thursday, as Bones' 2.5 adults 18-49 rating was even with last week, and Fringe fell 5% to a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating.

Although beating Flash Forward again, the CW's Vampire Diaries was flat vs. last week in adults 18-49 (1.6 rating), and women 18-34 (2.4 rating). After hitting season highs last week, Supernatural was even with last week's preliminary number of a 1.5 women 18-34 rating.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Glad to see Grey's and everything else still has some life. Anybody who doesn't watch The Mentalist is missing out on THE best lead on television, bar none. Simon Baker is absolutely brilliant.

Considering Fringe's ratings lately, think you might need a “renewal too soon” post there as well?

    Seems to be dropping again.

    Edit: First post?! Wow…

Grey's has become monotonous and directionless IMO. Last night's episode seemed like a little improvement, but that could just be because they've been off the air for a month. The ratings are nice, though… Finally.

Private Practice was absolutely amazing, although at this point I can't imagine who's getting killed off in two weeks. It would just seem so random… One of the actors really had to get out of their contract, huh? Oh-kay… I hope the episode will round up to 3.0 in the finals.

30 Rock doesn't make any sense anymore but it's still entertaining except for Tracy Morgan who is the dumbest person on broadcast TV. The guy can't enunciate even the simplest of sentences. Parks was great although I wish they'd break up the zero chemistry duo Mark and Ann. And how bad is situation on NBC when I see 2.0 for Parks and consider it a success…

  7. Raptor6408

Ditto on the Marriage Ref. I think that the novelty has worn off and its downhill from here.

  8. TimFan

Seriously Why did FOX renew fringe? Those numbers are horrible

  9. alimokrane

The last Original airing of Private Practice was last week Bill not 4/1. Nice to see everything up though, what a relief!

  10. DesperateManar

Since Grey's was up, maybe DH will be up too. I really hope so. Cause' the final three episodes of DH are not to be missed, especially the final, which has TONS of things happening in it.

  11. chucktranberg

I can gurantee that NBC will not put the Marriage Ref on Thursday nights in the Fall. The Office is the only show on NBC that really gets a fairly decent rating on Thursday nights on NBC–but even that is a far cry from the classic “must-see” NBC sitcoms of the 80's and 90's. Does the Marriage Ref really do much better than Leno did on Thursdays?

  12. Sorry, the PP comparison to 4/1 should have noted last *regular timeslot* original episode. Fixed.

  13. Tv101

Survivor is having a great season!!

  14. SJ

This sudden uptick in the ratings reminds me, I've been meaning to ask you, do you know why virtually all shows have their season highs in December, in that one lone episode after the Thanksgiving break (usually the last episode before the Christmas break)?

  15. PeterFR

NBC Thursday is in big trouble if Steve Carell quits The Office and forces the show to end, because based on last night's ratings, neither Community, Parks or the Marriage Ref are anywhere CLOSE to picking up the slack. All 3 shows got 2.0 ratings with new episodes. Really bad.

  16. EvilEvilMonkey

Nice to see that “Bones” added a million viewers at the half-hour mark.

  17. I believe that 2.0 for Fringe is a new episode season low, am checking.

  18. Tom

Why are people surprised by Fringe's ratings? Here's the handy rule:

Was The Office a new episode? Then Fringe ends up somewhere between 2.0 and 2.2.

Was The Office a repeat? Then Fringe jumps up to 2.5-2.6.

(Note: CSI repeats may bump up Fringe by .1 or so.)

Simply put, Fox desperately needs to move Fringe next season, or somehow hope The Office is canceled, because the numbers aren't changing.

And it's fairer to say “Fox wasn't affected by Draft” last week, rather than docking points for not rising this week.

  19. Community and Parks back up to a 2.0… but look how low the total viewers are. They should be embarking on massive promotional campaigns for those shows, if not now, then ahead of next season.

If Community and Parks were able to get up to 6 or 7 million viewers then they would have very healthy demo numbers.

  20. alimokrane

@ Bill, ah Yeah that's true, I forgot that it was swapped with Grey's timeslot.
