"Damages" Canceled?

Hardly a stunner if true, but I hear the crew of Damages got the news today that the show is no more.   Though I can't confirm the report (thus the question mark), the source of the info has been reliable in the past.

While it's generally not nearly as easy on cable to make sense of the ratings and what they mean for renewal as it is on the broadcast networks, Damages ratings were anemic to the point where they really stood out during its second and third seasons.  After a  fairly critically acclaimed first season, the show was given a renewal for two additional seasons.

    Is this a TVBTN exclusive?

  2. It'll be an Ausiello exclusive in a few hours.

  3. I couldn't find it anywhere else or on Twitter, but then again, I didn't look too hard. Perhaps I should've gone with “Exclusive: Damages Canceled, Maybe.” ;-)

  4. It will get some Emmy noms for Best Drama and then for the cast, Close will likely win again. The Writer's Strike hurt the show having such a large gap between seasons and it can be hard to like anyone on the show but it sucked me in and I enjoyed all three seasons.

Sadly, the most dramatic and heavy drama is saying goodbye. After an excelent 1st season, a not so good 2nd season much because of its complex story and an outstanding 3rd season and an awesome finale, Damages created a legion of fans which stayed with it until its very end.

    Goodbye, Damages.

well a legion was 3000-6000 men, so yeah, that sounds about right in describing the amount of Damages fans

The 1st season was outstanding, 2nd-meh and 3rd much improved. I knew this news was coming but it's still disappointing. I not only commend the actors but also KZK for their writing, directing, etc.
It wasn't a show for everyone or even that many, unfortunately. I thought from day 1 that this was not going to be an elongated series but I hoped for one more season.
My hope is that KZK have other things in the works that will come to fruition.

First and third seasons were really entertaining and kept me coming back for the next installment. I think it was a major mistake to kill off the male attorney this year. The Madoff type story was interesting to me.

This show had an amazing first season, sloppy second but a decent third. Shame to see it get cancelled (providing it is) but the ratings were indicative of it not getting picked up again.

It upsets me to hear that the second season was not so good, hopefully you came to this conclusion when you compared it to season 1 and not against other shows. I've just got through with season 1 on Blu-ray and have ordered season 2.

Interestingly, I did try and watch the show on a weekly basis when it aired on TV, however I was unable to get into it. I have no reason why this was the case, but given the serialized nature of the show, it was harder to follow than say a sitcom. Basically if you missed a episode, or heck, even ten minutes of an episode, you were lost.

I really do hope it's not cancelled as I'm sure to be finished with the next two seasons within a matter of weeks and it would be a shame not to have more episodes of this superbly produced drama to watch. I am in awe of Glenn Close.

    Funny! :)

3000-6000 is a reasonable number for a cable. Reasonable because it's low compared to numbers of its 1st season. Well, Damages marked an interesting era on the drama shows and FX must be glad about it.

On a first sight, Damages can be a little odd and confusing but as the season runs out, it gets more and more awesome. I agree with you when you say that season 2 was “meh”. 2nd season's storyline was too complex and confusing but it improved a little by the end. Sadly, it was only by the end.

  13. This isn't surprising. I'm slightly sad, but not really. It was an amazing show. I don't hesitate to recommend the first season to people, but it never really managed to recover that same pace.

saw this coming last year, and honestly who didn't. Damages was a great show the first season, I honestly believe it should have stayed a summer program, the second season being pretty bad probably didn't help either. While the third season was a lot better, the ratings didn't to be. Wonder if FX will think more clearly next time they sign a series for two seasons.

Why is this a question? why is there even an article about this. I knew damages was cancelled even before the Finale aired. The ratings were some of the lowest ratings in the history of cable tv.

  16. “The ratings were some of the lowest ratings in the history of cable tv.”

Low for cable scripted originals? Definitely.

    Low for FX primetime? Yep.

Low for cable TV overall? Not even remotely close.

The ratings were some of the lowest ratings in the history of cable tv.

Uh, not exactly. Not even close, in fact.

  18. carree

Not too surprising considering the way the finale ended. Seemed to tie up most of the loose ends. Really liked the writing and the cast. Sorry to see it go.

It was positively magnificent TV while it lasted.

  20. And so ends one of the greatest shows on television.
As for the 2nd season being meh–yeah, right. I saw there were a few more things thrown into the season than necessary, but I LOVED it when it was absolutely mind-numbingly confusing! I thought the whole season was just wonderful. The 3rd season is the one I found lacking. It was boring as hell for the first 7 episodes, (Ok not really, but it wasn't twisty, exciting Damages like I used to know and love) and then it finally started working like Damages again later in the season, pulling out a finale that had my jaw on the floor. I just know that story should've gone on! If not in a show, would the writers PLEASE write a novel or something! I need my Damages fix!
