Syndicated Top 25: Judge Judy Wins Again as Oprah Slips 20% vs 2009 + Legend Of The Seeker

Categories: '

May 11th, 2010

Once again, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy and Two and a Half Men took the top three spots in the syndication ratings.

Judge Judy was fourth, and trumped Oprah for daytime supremacy for the seventh consecutive week in the week ending May 2.  Oprah was down 20% versus the same week last year, and suffered a bigger year over year percentage loss than any other talk show.  Judge Judy was up 10% versus the same week in 2009.  And in the gross average audience (GAA) ratings that advertising sales are based on for shows that air the same episode more than once, Judge Judy towered above everything, including Two and a Half Men (Wheel and Jeopardy aren't measured for GAA purposes, presumably because they don't air more than once).

Ellen fans, she was just outside of the top 25 in average audience with 3.12 million and was tied for 22nd in household rating with a 2.3 rating.

Legend of the Seeker Fans:  Seeker ran a new episode "Extinction" the weekend of May 1, and the updated table for Season two’s ratings is still below the normal syndicated top 25 table.  While  it's hardly a surprise and there is still no official word from Disney ABC Domestic Television, sadly, Michael Ausiello reports that Seeker will wrap production after season two and  that there will not be a third season.  E! Online confirms the report.  Not to pile on, but it seems to have hit a season low for an original episode.

Friday Night Smackdown Fans: It didn't make the top 25 - it was tied for 42nd in HH rating with a 1.7 and averaged 2.718 million viewers.

Please note that the syndicated weekly results are delayed versus normal reporting.  While we get the broadcast and cable ratings for the prior Monday-Sunday period every Tuesday, there is an extra week of lag time with the syndicated ratings and these numbers are not for last week, but for the week before last (in other words, the WWE Friday Night Smackdown! is for April 30,  not May 7).

Note: all numbers  below are "average audience" figures rather than "gross average audience."

For anyone wondering,  "Warner Bros. Vol 37" is a movie package and the movie that week was "A Perfect Murder."

I don't think you are looking at the right season for Legend of the Seeker. The episode aired on May 1st 2010 was “Extinction”. “Cursed” aired May 2nd of 2009, and I find it hard to believe that ratings dropped from the previous week given the online activity regarding the show. Could you please double check your numbers?

  2. Pontes

Do you know the HH rating for Legend of the Seeker's episodes on the 5th and 12th of December?

  3. Empire

Wow that does not look good for LOTS, you would think the numbers would continue to climb considering on the internet noise, and even the usual trend LOTS has, when new episodes follow each week generally seems to climb. Hopefully a mistake, but doubt it, most likely that Nielsen viewers just are not watching.

  4. ” you would think ….considering on the internet noise”

Except for the wonder that is Betty White, internet noise almost never is a reason to think something.

  5. The name of the episode of Legend of the Seeker was Extinction, not Cursed ! Are the ratings wrong too ?

  6. brando_j

That is sad if those numbers for Seeker are correct. I think that's the episode Rahl finally comes back to the land of the living. (No spoiler it was in the promo). You would think more fans would have really wanted to watch that episode. Oh well Game of Thrones next Spring on HBO. I can get pumped for that.

  7. monicaporrata

I don't believe the ratings listed above for Legend of the Seeker. First of all, the ep that aired that Saturday was NOT called “Cursed”. It was “Extinction”. So if there's a discrepancy with the name of the ep, I wud thk the ratings wud be suspect as well. I will continue 2 fight 4 the show getting a Season 3. We have Terry Goodkinds' support which, I think, will put us over the top!! #SaveOurSeeker

  8. Robert may have gotten the LotS episode name wrong (he pulls that from another source), but that 1.958 million average viewer number is correct. The spreadsheet from Nielsen is in front of me.

  9. Indeed, I used the name of the episode from the week in 2009 (now fixed), but the ratings are definitely for the weekend of May 1-2, 2010.

  10. The numbers for LEGEND OF THE SEEKER looks troubling. I personally think that “rumors” (ABC Studios has not released and official statement regarding the shows future) of the show's cancellation is hurting the remaining S2 episodes. Add that to the erratic and sometimes unreasonable timeslot Seeker is being aired, one cannot help but say WTF!!!!!!

I don' think Nielsen ratings are all that relevant with a show like this. Better to look at Hulu and iTunes statistics. Below is part of a comment from the ABC News Discussion on Facebook regarding Legend of the Seeker posted by a Nielsen viewer yesterday:

“I'm a Nielsen Viewing home; and had to purchase Netflix to enjoy a timely showing of Seeker each week. It's pretty apparent from all I have read, and viewed that this show could, and should be a success for you. It's also very clear that it's fate was put into the hands of Network owner Tribune; who for sometime have been an unstable company. While it's business, and profits are the primary motive; it seems counterproductive to produce a show that fans love, and then have it completely misrepresented by Tribune ie.. little to no ad time; no set day; let alone time slot.”

  12. It's perhaps reasonable to argue whether the ratings should be relevant for a show like LoTS, but there's no reasonable argument about whether they do matter. They do matter.

I'd be suspicious of anyone claiming to be a Nielsen viewing family, particularly if they are posting on Facebook non-anonymously. Nielsen prohibits families in its panel from disclosing that info. Also, Tribune doesn't produce LoTS, it merely licensed the rights.

I don’t believe the numbers posted above 4 Legend of the Seeker. First of all, Cursed was NOT the ep that aired that day, it was Extinction. If the name of the ep is wrong, then maybe the numbers 2? Pls. accurately report the name of the episodes of Legend of the Seeker. Terry Goodkind is on board w/his full support. We will have a Season 3! I’m as biased as the reporting above was regarding Legend of the Seeker. I’m skewed in favor of the show, obviously!
    Thank you.

To clarify, my comments were in regard to the relevancy of Nielsen ratings for LoTS and the comments on Tribune were from the poster in the ABC News discussion. I don't know how these ratings are compiled but in my area for instance, LoTS is aired on Saturday at 5:00 pm on CW, so are these numbers somehow included in the count?

As far as the relevancy of Nielsen ratings overall, I don't know enough about how it works to reply intelligently but I will say that I personally don't know anyone who is a 'Nielsen Viewer' however most of the people I do know have dropped their exorbitantly priced $150 a month cable television in favor of watching what they want, when they want, on the internet. For various reasons, economics and convenience to name just two, how people watch TV is changing and these changes will at some point need to be recognized in order to obtain accurate viewing numbers.

Could it be because when they turned the channel to the show they were showing a soccer game for the fist 10 mins of the show, and so they lost people!!!! It’s the stations fault, and the fact that it is in a sucky timeslot, the Kentucky Derby was on! Duh!!! Get a clue? Who the heck in that industry knows what’s going on!
