‘Torchwood’ Move Sounds Like A Good One For Starz
I have no more information about the fact that Torchwood’s next season in the US will be on Starz other than the recent press release, but including a few fan laments, it may have been a good marketing move for Starz.
For a pay channel like Starz, one way to get new subscribers is to create a successful new series like Spartacus: Blood and Sand with some buzz, but another is what they seem to be doing with Torchwood, trying to induce the fans of an existing show to subscribe.
Since only about 20% of the US TV households subscribe to Starz (vs. 57% for BBC America the “current” home of Torchwood) in the latest numbers we have, the addition of existing shows to Starz’s line up could give them a sign up bonus. It’s also a boost to Netflix, which currently allows streaming of the Starz catalog to subscribers.
