The FIFA World Cup Soccer tournament begins this Friday at 10am ET (coverage begins at 9:30a on ESPN) as host country South Africa takes on Mexico. Around the world that's sure to draw a lot of eyeballs, but here in the United States it gets more interesting on Saturday when USA takes on England at 2:30p ET (coverage begins at 1:30pm ET on ABC.)
It's hard to imagine a better non-final match from the perspective of US ratings. The 2006 final between France and Italy averaged just over 17 million viewers. But it didn't feature English speaking Revolutionary War rivals. I'm guessing around 15 million viewers average for USA vs. England if it's a close match throughout. If it's 4-nil in favor of England after 20 minutes, all bets are off.
Those smarter than I about soccer viewing will quickly point out that the out of home viewing will likely be off the charts. Though that viewing will not be included in any of the Nielsen ratings we'll report for the World Cup, ABC/ESPN is probably paying to do some out of of home measurement. It's not likely any of that data will be available for ABC/ESPN to trumpet while the tournament is still going on, but sooner or later we will perhaps at least get some idea of the out of home viewing

In most cases it looks like the coverage begins 30 minutes before the match, though ABC will begin coverage an hour before the USA vs. England match. Update: the Univision schedule has now been added too.

Oh, imagine if the U.S. beat England the way the Brits are trash-talking right now. If you think the hooligans they send to the matches weren't bad enough, think of what they'd do if England loses to the U.S. and has to face a 1st place team in the round of 16

Any of the comprehensive work above (as far as the data in the tables) was done by our friends at ESPN/ABC.
Even separate from being a fan, and knowing it is but a dream, selfishly we hope the USA goes to the final. There will definitely be more interest in the ratings here in the US if that happens.
It's worth noting hat the opening match will feature Mexico. I would suspect really high numbers for Univision. ESPN could see very high numbers considering what would be exected at that time of day.
As for the USA/ ENGLAND match, I have doubts about any huge numbers (I wish, I Iove this tournament). It's midday on the first weekend of summer for many Americans. Tough timing. It will be interesting to see the viewership curve as the tourny goes on.
Mighty England will smash everyone out of this competition. With players like Rooney, Lampard, GERRAD' Shaun Wright philips, Carriger, the subtle defence, the reliable mid field, the concrete attack and the cool custodian, the other teams will watch and see and England will play and deliver. the little threat will either come from argentina or Spain. God saves the queen and God saves England. Its a prediction that the 2010 will cup will surely go to England. we will will surely win. Chelsea Liverpool Man United and Man city will deliver together. I wouldn't go writing off the Americans yet, rumour is that the English team have been asked to hold back to offset the anti British feeling being caused by that dipsh*t that heads up BP!! “I want my life back”, what an ar*s!!
If ABC can get some out of home numbers I'll put the vieweing figures for the US v England game north on 20m. I'll also put the Mexico game north of 20m.
4-0 in favor of England after 20 minutes isn't going to happen, not even in Rooney's wildest dreams.
The U.S. is going to beat England 2×1. Also look for Argentina to exit early. Remember where you read it when it happens.

My Take: I expect the match to do something like between 12-15 million on ABC, and another 3-4 million on Univision HD. It is very possible to have a combined television audience of 15-18 million on ABC and Univision…Now if the US beats England, watch out for the ratings…
As for my final prediction for the World Cup Final game on July 11th (ABCHD and Univision HD), should see a combined audience of 20+ million ( somewhere around 22 million, and as high as 25 million)….Things could change to the upside with the US making it to the Quarterfinals or Semi-finals…
The FIFA World Cup Soccer tournament begins this Friday at 10am ET (coverage begins at 9:30a on ESPN) as host country South Africa takes on Mexico. Around the world that’s sure to draw a lot of eyeballs, but here in the United States it gets more interesting on Saturday when USA takes on England at 2:30p ET (coverage begins at 1:30pm ET on ABC.)
It’s hard to imagine a better non-final match from the perspective of US ratings. The 2006 final between France and Italy averaged just over 17 million viewers. But it didn’t feature English speaking Revolutionary War rivals. I’m guessing around 15 million viewers average for USA vs. England if it’s a close match throughout. If it’s 4-nil in favor of England after 20 minutes, all bets are off.
Those smarter than I about soccer viewing will quickly point out that the out of home viewing will likely be off the charts. Though that viewing will not be included in any of the Nielsen ratings we’ll report for the World Cup, ABC/ESPN is probably paying to do some out of of home measurement. It’s not likely any of that data will be available for ABC/ESPN to trumpet while the tournament is still going on, but sooner or later we will perhaps at least get some idea of the out of home viewing
Below are tables of the groupings as well as the schedule of matches. Note the times are for when coverage begins, not actual match starting times. In most cases it looks like the coverage begins 30 minutes before the match, though ABC will begin coverage an hour before the USA vs. England match.
Thank you very much for posting the breakdown of which matches will be available where. I just assumed the US vs Eng match would be on ESPN3.com, looks like I'll need to be sure to be around a TV with ABC on Saturday around 2:30.

I've spoken to about 8 Stateside friends over the last couple of weeks and mentioned the game, most haven't even been aware of it.
I'm in London at the moment and about 10% of cars have an English flag flying from them, about 10% of houses are flying an English flag and you can't walk into ANY store without seeing some kind of World Cup promotion. The one thing I miss when I'm at my place in Monterey is there's really no regular event that happens that draws Americans together the way the World Cup draws together other countries in the World.
