“World News with Diane Sawyer” Grows its Total Viewing and Demo Audiences Year to Year

Closes Total Viewing and Demo Gaps with NBC Year to Year

For the week of June 14th, “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” averaged 6.81 million Total Viewers and a 1.6/7 among Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research. Compared to the same period last year, “World News” delivered 400,000 additional Total Viewers and 190,000 more Adults 25-54.

“World News” narrowed both the total viewing and demo gaps with “NBC Nightly News” year to year. The total viewing gap was 42% smaller, and ABC cut the gap among Adults 25-54 by 35%. Additionally, ABC’s weekly total viewing advantage over “CBS Evening News” grew by 130,000.

Note: ABC’s weekly average is based on 3 days (Mon, Wed, Fri) due to the NBA Finals. NBC’s weekly average is based on 3 days (Mon-Wed). CBS is based on a 5-day average. Week to Week, the 6:30-7:00 pm Households Using Television (HUT) and People Using Television (PUT) levels for Total Viewers were down 1%, while the PUT level for Adults 25-54 was down 2%.

Last week “World News” continued its extensive coverage of the oil spill in the Gulf, with team coverage throughout the week from David Muir, Sharyn Alfonsi and Matt Gutman reporting from the Gulf region, and Jake Tapper and Jonathan Karl reporting from Washington as the BP executives arrived at the capitol. Dr. Richard Besser provided an investigation into the ritual practice of female genital cutting. In addition, “World News” provided coverage from the World Cup with John Berman reporting.
