Futurama's premiere return to new episodes on Comedy Central scored strongly in the ratings Thursday. At 10pm it tallied 2.92 million average viewers and a 1.6 adults 18-49 rating, and 2.78 million average viewers and a 1.5 adults 18-49 rating at 10:30pm. (via TV Bill)

Burn Notice was effectively flat at  5.333 million viewers vs. last week, and the same 1.6 adults 18-49 rating. Royal Pains viewership was down slightly to 5.295 million viewers, also with the same 1.6 adults 18-49 rating.

The NBA Draft couldn't hold a candle to the NFL Draft.

Was it two new episodes? And, if so, why? Does Comedy Central plan to burn through the season in 6 weeks?

  2. AppleStinx

Flying solo over there, Mr. Gorman?

  3. ShirtlessLocke

I think they just aired two as a way to mark the debut of the show's return. I believe the season will run throughout the summer as usual until its final episode on September 2nd.

  4. Robert is substantially, but not entirely, on vacation this month. The disappointment of his legion of fans is palpable.

I will be gone in August. Both of my fans will have to get over the cheering from the rest of our readers. ;)

  5. I believe the last originals in the slots (Important Things and Sarah Silverman) premiered to 1.1 million and 767K viewers respectively, so Futurama improves the timeslot bigtime. Though neither could reach even the lowest ratings for South Park this season. Regardless, should be good news as far as Futurama getting renewed past 2011.

  6. Jon

I'm surprised Comedy Central didn't pair Futurama with South Park but the ratings are still very good especially as it airs against Royal Pains and it skewed young which is even better for Comedy Central.

Robert's away and that means all us mice can come out and play! Let us trash this place! Join us, Phil. You know you want to. Let us start up blog posts for our favorite dead series and fantasize how we can bring them back to life. My vote goes to “Junkyard Wars” and my resurrection plan is getting Goodwrench as the sponsors.

  8. AppleStinx

Charming self-deprecation, but you have slightly more Disqus points and your points/comments ratio is higher than Robert's.
Another possible measurement: not to say that all visits are by fans, but come September, you would know the number of total visits in June and August.

I'm glad Futurama returns. Hopefully it stays like south park. In that timeslot for many years to come.

Does the person (or team) who canceled Futurama (and family guy) get a christmas letter full of crow?

  11. Thomas

Wow, 1.6/1.5 A18-49 is pretty great news for Futurama.

@Julia: They do indeed plan to end the “season” by early september. But not because they'll burn them quickly, rather the opposite since they're only airing 12 of the 26 ordered episodes this summer. Another set of 12 will be kept for next year, and the last two will be specials (one for christmas, one TBD)

  12. jimtv

Interesting that these tired cartoons rate so well 18-49.

  13. It looks like some of the summer options on the networks are taking a chunk of viewership from USA's cable darlings. I seriously expected both Burn Notice and Royal Pains to be up this week, not just treading water. I don't have numbers in front of me, but this feels like a significant drop from last summer (and a drop of about 1.4 million from just a few weeks ago when the season premiered).

  14. Doppy

Speaking of Burn Notice and Royal Pains, I don't think you guys ever announced who won the contests, did you? My guess for Royal Pains was really close so I'm just wondering.

  15. Jimbo

Just wish Futurama wasn't' on Comedy Central, their Obsession hatred of Christianity, no wonder why they are the lowest cable network.

  16. The lowest in what way?

  17. Joan

What is the lowest cable network? I guess the shopping channels. Do you keep track of that I just don't see how they stay on the air with so many channels. I love Futurama; did they change voices Leela? Sounds different and they kind of mentioned it. I watch it online on cast tv, try not to watch Comedy Central.

  18. janedoesays

I think I'm most shocked that Royal Pains are holding on to Burn Notice's lead in. TNT and USA have better shows through the summer than the fall.

  19. Lord Seth

Actually, the cancellation of those two was in retrospect a brilliant business decision. Neither built up that big of an audience before their cancellation. So, Fox cancels them, they get popular without Fox having to spend ANY money producing new episodes, and then they're brought back to significantly higher ratings.

  20. WalthamDan

Why couldn't that footage of Real Housewives of NYC remain lost?
