Endless Gordon Ramsay Summer?  Hell's Kitchen was the week's top show with the advertising-centric adults 18-49, and Ramsay's new show, MasterChef, premiered at #3 on that list.  The Bachelorette was second and America's Got Talent fourth with adults 18-49.  Props to The Big Bang Theory which snuck into the top 5 shows with the 18-49 crowd with a repeat.

Update: Though the tables below are just for the broadcast networks, HBO's True Blood's 3.0 rating with adults 18-49 on Sunday night topped everything else for the week on cable or on the broadcast nets.

With total viewers, America's Got Talent edged out The Bachelorette though neither could break the 10 million viewer mark (this is for Monday July 26, the Monday August 2 finale of The Bachelorette did over 11 million viewers).  A repeat of NCIS was the week's most-watched scripted content with nearly 8.9 million viewers.  Take that, iCarly!

Univision's soap operas do well in the demos. Would there be a site to find the female/male breakdown on that? Or are they just popular across the board? I surf past them and they look very overly dramatic and old fashioned. It is the only Spanish speaking station on our non-digital basic/expanded cable system. Could the high ratings be because there is certainly not much choice for those who wish to watch in their own language?

Wow, looking at the demo top 25, even considering 1/4-1/3 are in my second language, I only watched one of the shows (including original airings), Masterchef, and that was a looksee, that will not be repeated by me.

Even on the total viewers top 25, I only watched Masterchef and of the 1/2 of the list that is repeats, I only watched 3 shows when they originally aired.

Cable clearly owns my TV viewing butt during the summer.

You would think that it would just be the stereotypical Hispanic grandmas that are the main audience of Spanish-language telenovelas, when in reality these shows skew very young (and presumably female). It boggles my mind as to why there aren't more total viewers (aka older folks) watching these shows when they really are very old-fashioned and have over-the-top melodrama. Perhaps a majority of the over-50 portion of the telenovela audience isn't even counted in the Nielsen ratings?

I remember a former patient I used to see in my practice who was a young man in his 20s and very….well street savvy…..and one thing you did not do was bother him while he was watching his “stories”.

Funny how NCIS LA overall overnight rating was 7.21 in total viewers Tuesday night and The Mentalist overall ratings in total viewers was 7.42 Thursday night, yet on this report the overall ratings for these programs were the opposite of what was reported those nights. Why was that? Could it be that the overnight ratings were incorrect? Still were good ratings for both programs.

I doubt it's the lack of choice. Any market that only has one Spanish broadcast station is not going to be heavily populated with Hispanics. Univision's availability in more homes than Telemundo and other Spanish options would be a reason it does better than any other Spanish network, but I don't think it would be a good explanation as to why it does well compared to English nets.

  7. It would be interesting to see an analysis of Univision's population coverage vs. its three or four other Spanish language competitors since Uni seems to be the only one that shows up in the Top 25.

Also, very interesting to note that Uni shows up repeatedly in the Top 25 in 18-49 but not at all in P2+.

This would seem to cut against the argument that older Spanish speakers are more English resistant and that younger Spanish speakers are more linguistically flexible.

    Interesting.

You are correct when asking if there is limited variety on Spanish TV, even though increasingly we are seeing the rise of Telemundo, Azteca America, La Estrella, Fox en Español, CNN en Español and many other channels/networks. But Univision has a hold on the Spanish-speaking audience for the following reason: most Hispanics are of Mexican origin, many have migrated to the US were they can simply tune in to Univision and watch the telenovelas they have watched for generations in Mexico. Univision gets its programming from Mexican giant Televisa. These dramas bring in the nostalgia of back home for many Latinos, having the drama take place in provincial towns, beaches or Mexican urban settings that Telemundo–Univision's distant second rival–cannot duplicate. These Mexican Telenovelas are also the best of the best since Univision hand picks what it wants after seeing how well these dramas do when they air in advance in Mexico (NBC, ABC, CBS & FOX would love to have that set up, no gambling on pilots).

By the way, I used to think these telenovelas were cheesy. And some are… on purpose. But once you get into them, you find they are not “novellas” in the American sense, rather stories such as Desperate Housewives or Lost. By the way, I don't have the info in front of me but I have read that the viewership of these telenovela viewers is almost split in half male/female (unlike American novellas who are mostly women).

  9. Sandan3

Also, keep in mind that Telemundo has traditionally been focused with Hispanics of Caribbean background. Telemundo is now expanding into Mexico and learning the ways of Televisa in order to undercut Univision for 2017, the year Televisa will stop supplying Univision with its stunningly successful telenovelas. With over 50 million Hispanics in the US, and 2/3 of Mexican origin, it is no wonder why Univision wins out: it gives Mexican-Americans and Mexicans what they want… something they cannot get from Telemundo which supplies its airwaves with Venezuelan or Brazilian soaps that are alien to many Hispanics of Mexican background.

  10. judy912

Mr Robert Seidman, can you tell me why the difference in the final tally of viewers for both NCIS LA and The Mentalist from the overnight ratings? Seems the number of total viewership is incorrect either on the overnight listings of these fine shows or on this weekly ratings list! NCIS LA was listed with 7.21 total viewers on the Tuesday night report and The Mentalist was listed with 7.42 on the Thursday night report. Were those overnight listings incorrect?

  11. yikes, indeed the data in the table above is reversed and it should be the Mentalist 7.432M and NCIS: LA with 7.205M. I will correct. The numbers for the original overnight report were correct, but they are preliminary numbers and these are final numbers.

  12. judy912

Thank you for the correction Mr Seidman. At least now I know I wasn't misreading the information. I look forward to watching the new fall season for these two superb programs.

  13. Dvargas

Actually the majority of Telemundo's novelas are produced in Colombia or are produced in their Miami studio's.
