“World News with Diane Sawyer” is the Only Newscast to Grow
Both Total Viewing and Demo Audiences Week to Week & Year to Year

Closes Total Viewing Gap with NBC to Smallest Margin of the Season

Expands Total Viewing and Demo Advantages Over CBS Week to Week & Year to Year

For the week of August 2nd, “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” averaged 6.85 million Total Viewers and a 1.5/7 among Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research.  “World News” topped “NBC Nightly News” by 90,000 Total Viewers on Friday, August 6. The total viewing gap between “World News” and “NBC Nightly News” shrank to the smallest margin of the season, and the demo gap was the smallest since the week of May 31.

“World News” was the only newscast to experience growth among both Total Viewers (+100,000) and Adults 25-54 (+20,000) week to week. In addition, “World News” was the only program to grow both its total viewing audience (+5%) and its demo audience (+1%) year to year.

Compared to the previous week the total viewing gap between “World News” and “NBC Nightly News” was 54% smaller, at 320,000 viewers, and the gap among Adults 25-54 was 13% smaller, at 260,000 viewers. Year to year, ABC narrowed the total viewing gap with NBC by 70%.

“World News’” total viewing and demo advantages over “CBS Evening News” grew both week to week and year to year. ABC’s weekly total viewing advantage (1,840,000) over CBS increased by 4% and its demo advantage (390,000) increased by 11%. This marks ABC’s largest advantage over CBS among Adults 25-54 since May. Compared to the same period last year, ABC’s advantage among Total Viewers expanded by 29%, and among Adults 25-54 it grew by 11%.

Last week “World News” covered the California ruling overturning the gay marriage ban.  While the oil in the Gulf stopped leaking and the well was killed last week, “World News” continued to report on the challenges that face the people of the region moving forward, with reporting from Jeffrey Kofman. Diane Sawyer anchored “World News” from Washington on Thursday, as the Senate confirmed Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court.
