There Will Never Be a 'Veronica Mars' Movie Unless Betty White Signs Up

Ah, Veronica Mars.  A long time ago, we used to be friends.   At least in an alternate universe where TV by the Numbers launched earlier than it did in this universe.  And if you subscribe to the alternate universe theory, then take solace in the notion that in some universe Veronica Mars is heading into its seventh season.

Our site launched just after Veronica Mars ended so we missed all the “Veronica Mars: Renew or Cancel?” hoopla.  But there are a lot of fossils in the historical record and despite missing the boat timing-wise, we’re well aware of Veronica Mars and how those two words usually bring out the claws for CW chief Dawn Ostroff.

Kristen Bell (who played the title role) has taken to Twitter and Facebook to rally her fan base in support of a Veronica Mars movie. There’s even the obligatory fan-baiting online petition.

While I don’t fault Ms. Bell for trying, it’s unimaginable that Warner Bros. would be moved to think it a good idea.  The show wasn’t exactly a ratings juggernaut (though for Rob Thomas, compared to Party Down, Veronica Mars was American Idol) and it didn’t reach the pop culture significance of say The Sopranos or Sex and the City.

But what if Kristen Bell could talk Betty White into playing Veronica’s great-grandmother in distress?

Netflix subscribers: all three seasons of Veronica Mars are available (in HD, too).

  1. “(though for Rob Thomas, compared to Party Down, Veronica Mars was American Idol)”

    Quote of the day.

Everyone can go home now. ;)

While a theater release is beyond the scope of anyone’s imagination, I do think that WB was interested at one point in a DTV release, but Rob Thomas wasn’t interested in that at the time. Who knows if he would be now, but it seems that ship, too, has sailed.

  3. Actually, it’s very possible. In one of the tweets, Bell notes that WB doesn’t think there’s an audience for a big-screen version of the film (which is probably true), to which she asks for the studio to release the rights so that it can be made privately.

I have no doubt that if WB released the rights, Thomas would make the film as an Independent project.

    Via Bell’s Twitter account:

“…they [WB] own the rights. they gotta make it, or set it free! we would be happy to make it privately!”

  4. Perhaps, but you should certainly have doubts about WB simply “releasing” the rights without receiving payment.

  5. That’s true. We don’t know what, if anything, is happening behind the scenes. It’s always possible that WB has no intention, regardless of payment, of letting go the rights of the project (or even partner with anyone else for it).

Same never as DirectTV never picking up Damages or the same never as Dollhouse Season 2?

    Never say never.

Also, on the Betty White thing, she is costarring with Bell in a movie coming out very soon, so maybe there’s a chance it could happen! Someone should suggest it to Bell. ;)

  8. C’mon now, even Glenn Close & Rose Byrne expressed shock about the DirecTV thing. And the record pretty clearly shows that Fox goofed by renewing Dollhouse.

Seriously though, your point is taken, but dare I say the day will never come when you will never see the word never in a blog post. I do indeed dare.

Well, I already tweeted this idea to her 3 hours ago.

  10. The internet fulfills all wishes, nearly instantly…

Further proof that you have to fulfill your own wishes to get anything done. ;)

  12. There are no original ideas! While I didn’t copy you and I’m sure there are many people who came to the same conclusion, your tweet was before I was even aware that Kristen Bell was rallying the troops!

But does it hurt that she’s doing that? No. All it does is prove that she is committed to the show and to her fans, even 3 years later. I don’t see the harm in that. At least she’s doing something.

No worries. Great minds think alike! Would love to see it all come to fruition.

“Everyone can go home now. ;)

    Ok. See you on Tuesday.

  16. thus “While I don’t fault Ms. Bell for trying”

  17. I think Bell wants to do another VM project, whatever it may be, because not only is it her best role, it also showcases all sides of her ability. She’s been in these stupid comedies now like Sarah Marshall and the two Disney films, and I’m guessing she’s feeling typecast that she’s just a comedic actress. VM enabled her to be funny but also serious and it was a well-rounded, well-written character (in addition to a terrific show).

Perhaps because of the roles she’s had lately, she might feel she needs to be Veronica again more than ever.

  18. Julia

Personally, as a VM fan, I find it cute that she’s so enthusiastic about this even 3 years later, but I am extremely disappointed that she’s perpetuating the idea that online petitions mean anything. If she thinks that all WB needs is proof that there’s an audience, online petitions are not the way to go, and I really hope she figures that out soon.

Betty White as a frail great-grandmother in distress? Thanks for the laugh! :)

Veronica Mars and how those two words usually bring out the claws for CW chief Dawn Ostroff.

For me, it’s just one word: Reba.

  20. X-Files 3 should be made before Veronica Mars. At least it has a proven audience.
