Taking over CNN's 9pm hour from Larry King who's been stuck in third, and sometimes fourth place among cable news networks for quite some time would seem to be a big hole to climb out of, but Piers Morgan is undeterred.
"I didn't join the network to come in second or third or fourth," Morgan said during a conference call with reporters on Wednesday (Sept. 8). "I want to be first."
You've got to admire his spirit, but it will be quite a climb.
His new show begins in January.

How about in fifth, where CNN will be by January.

And he’ll do it too – he appeals to the dog in the everyman.
Will he call the viewers names too? And their family members?

Piers will soon discover that if it’s ratings he wants, he has gone to the wrong place at the wrong time, with the wrong concept. On the plus side, almost ANYTHING is better than Larry King at this point. Except maybe Rick Sanchez, Joyless Behar, Olbermann, Ed, and Fareed.
I will be really surprised if his show does any sort of decent numbers. Wouldn’t it help if he was American Vs. and Englishman? I always thought of Kings show as more American than for a worldwide audience. I imagine he’s actually a good choice as he tells it like it is, which is very refreshing in this kiss all the celebrities asses society. I hope it does well, but for god sake’s they must change the boring as hell format that Larry King had set up. The only time I watched King was when he got a guest I was interested in. I will be curious if he can get any sort of big names like Larry was able to do. That was one of the best things King had, he was able to get people that no one else could. Very much doubt Piers will be able to do that for at least a few years, if ever.
Is the show still going to be live? They’ve already announced he’s returning as a judge on America’s Got Talent. Their last several shows of each season are live and usually 9p-11p or 9p-10p.

I think they can stand a couple repeats for a few weeks during the summer.
He’s such a jackass, I hope it fails but on the other hand knowing he’s not in Britain makes it better.
Too bad you will be and have no chance at being first when working for CNN.
You state, . . . I will be curious if he can get any sort of big names like Larry was able to do. That was one of the best things King had, he was able to get people that no one else could”
There was no real surprise to this. Larry King would give celebrities (or whoever was in the news du jour) a forum in which they were able to verbalize (read as tout) their positions and they didn’t have to worry about having to field any tough questions. He continuously threw up nice big fat softball questions for them to hit.
I like Piers Morgan on America’s Got Talent. I seem to always agree with his comments. I’m not sure what type of show he’ll have on a news channel. I’ll watch (and DVR Rachel … or vice versa)….
“I didn’t join the network to come in second or third or fourth…” but considering it’s CNN that is probably in the contract.
