UNIVISION’S GRUELING REALITY COMPETITION “DESAFIO: LA GRAN BATALLA” (THE CHALLENGE: THE BIG BATTLE) DECLARES A WINNER

VIEWERS CAST 2.5 MILLION VOTES AND CHOOSE YUNIOR PUIG TO TAKE HOME $100,000 GRAND PRIZE

MIAMI, FL, SEPTEMBER 10, 2010 – The Univision Television Network celebrated the grand finale of “Desafio: La Gran Batalla” (The Challenge: The Big Battle), the grueling reality competition where a group of contestants were stranded on a tropical island with just the bare necessities to fend for themselves. Hosted by popular actor Michel Brown, last night’s finale was surprisingly revealing for the three finalists who awaited their fate in front of a live studio audience. Captivated viewers across the nation cast 2.5 million votes and chose Yunior Puig from Las Vegas, NV as the ultimate winner of the $100,000 grand prize.

“We want to congratulate Yunior on winning ‘Desafío: La Gran Batalla’,” said Luis Fernández, president of Entertainment for Univision Network and Univision Studios. “Conquering all of the show’s challenges required each contestant to give 110% and we are very happy that our viewers were able to not only enjoy the show for its entertainment value, but also give their support to the three contestants who battled it out to get to the final.”

Originally from Cuba, Puig resides in Las Vegas, NV where he earns a living as a truck driver and as a professional scuba diver. He left Cuba four years ago and came to the United States looking for a better life that would enable him to provide for his family who stayed behind.

“I would like to thank all the people that supported me and made this dream possible,” said Yunior Puig, “Desafio: La Gran Batalla’s” winner.  “Participating in this show has taught me a valuable lesson- to appreciate what we have. During the competition we’d find ourselves with everything we needed at the beach house one day and nothing the next. There are millions of people who have nothing, not even food to eat. My biggest dream is to go back to Cuba and visit my family whom I haven’t seen since I left four years ago- that would be the best gift anyone could give me.”

Throughout the course of 12 weeks, eighteen contestants faced-off in a fierce competition that tested their physical strength and mental endurance. After a series of eliminations, three finalists made it to the grand finale: Alejandra Iglesias (Argentine) from Puerto Rico, Oscar Villagomez (Mexican) from Los Angeles, CA and Yunior Puig (Cuban) from Las Vegas, NV.

Univision.com (keyword: Desafio) provided complete online coverage of the show with videos and photos not seen on TV, behind the scenes footage and weekly recaps.  Fans could also access contestant profiles and interviews, and vote in “Desafio” polls and versus.  Plus, Univision.com’s virtual casting feature gave fans the chance to audition to become contestants themselves.  Mobile clips of the show were also available from the Univision Video App on all top Smartphone platforms.
