“World News with Diane Sawyer” the Only Evening Newscast to Grow Both Total Viewing and Demo Audiences Week to Week

“World News” Closes Total Viewing Gap with NBC by 36% and

Demo Gap by 38% Week to Week

For the week of September 6, “World News with Diane Sawyer” averaged 7.11 million Total Viewers and a 1.5/6 among Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research. “World News” increased its Total Viewing audience for the third straight week, to its highest since May. It also delivered its best demo delivery in five weeks with an additional 180,000 viewers week to week.

Compared to the previous week, the total viewing gap between “World News” and “NBC Nightly News” was 36% smaller, standing at 680,000 viewers, and the gap among Adults 25-54 was 38% smaller, standing at 400,000 viewers.

Additionally, “World News’” demo advantage (360,000) over “CBS Evening News” was the largest in five weeks, while ABC’s total viewing lead (2,140,000) was the largest since February.

Last week “World News” covered the deadly gas line explosion in San Bruno, CA. Dan Harris reported on the new role U.S. troops will play in Iraq and Jake Tapper and Jonathan Karl reported on the major issues facing politicians in the mid-term elections. In addition, “World News” followed the controversy over the planned Koran burning, with reporting from Terry Moran and Matt Gutman in Florida, Christiane Amanpour with the Imam in charge of the New York City Islamic Center, and Jonathan Karl on the media coverage of the controversy. Diane Sawyer anchored the broadcast from Los Angeles on Thursday and Friday.

Note: Due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday 9/06/10, all three evening newscasts were excluded from the average. The weekly averages for ABC & CBS are based on four days only (Tues-Fri) while NBC’s weekly average is based on 3 days (Tues, Wed & Fri) due to NFL Football.  In addition, CBS started late on Friday due to US Open Tennis and aired with a shorter duration (16 mins). Ratings are included in their average.

Jon Banner is the executive producer of “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer.”
