NOTRE DAME & #16 STANFORD MEET THIS SATURDAY ON NBC
“Saturday’s game is going to be a heck of a challenge for both teams.” – NBC Sports’ Mike Mayock
NEW YORK – September 22, 2010 – Notre Dame (1-2), coming off two hard-fought losses to Michigan and Michigan State, and No. 16 Stanford (3-0) renew their 86-year-old rivalry at Notre Dame Stadium this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on NBC.
Tom Hammond (play-by-play), Mike Mayock (analyst) and Alex Flanagan (sideline) anchor NBC Sports’ coverage. Mayock, one of television’s premier college football and NFL Draft experts, is in his first season with NBC Sports as a Notre Dame game analyst and has been called “impressive” by Sports Illustrated. MAYOCK ON THE IRISH: “Notre Dame’s record is a little deceiving. They have played a difficult schedule and are a few plays away from being undefeated. But, then again, you can’t look at it that way. They are 1-2. That’s who they are. It’s a football team that’s getting better. Saturday’s game is going to be a heck of a challenge for both teams.”
MAYOCK ON THE CARDINAL: “Head coach Jim Harbaugh has brought a physical and mental toughness to Stanford football. They play a 3-4 defense that has exceeded expectations so far. The Cardinal are a physical run team but with one of the best passers in the country in Andrew Luck, who is possibly a future first-round draft pick.
MAYOCK ON THE QUARTERBACKS: “It’s interesting to me that you have two of the top quarterbacks in the country coming out of high school now maturing into two of the top QBs in college football. Dayne Crist took a huge step last week against Michigan State.”
NOTRE DAME-STANFORD: Notre Dame leads the all-time series versus Stanford (17-7), including a 10-2 edge at Notre Dame Stadium that includes the last seven. The teams have played every year since 1997. The Irish have won 11 of the last 15 games in the series by an average margin of 11.2 points per game. Notre Dame is averaging 31.6 points per game in those meetings, while surrendering 20.4 (more on the series history on pages 26-31). Stanford won last year’s contest, 45-38, on the strength of Toby Gerhart’s four-yard touchdown run with 59 seconds remaining.
