TV Ratings Monday: The Event Drops; Chuck Tops Chase; Lie to Me Premieres

We now have dedicated show pages for all broadcast network shows (including Chuck, of course) with the most recent Renew/Cancel report,  latest news/info and links to episodic videos.

ABC won the night in adults 18-49 and total viewers with Dancing with the Stars and Castle.  Dancing was down 10% with adults 18-49 vs last Monday to a 4.3 between 8pm-10pm.   But Castle was up 7% to a 3.0.  Please note that any DWTS overrun is likely to reduce Castle's numbers by ~0.1 or so in the finals.  Also note that I'm not sure which affiliate carried the Monday Night Football game in Boston and other New England markets (in Miami it was on the CW) and that might cause small adjustments to tonight's numbers in the finals, too.

As predicted, Chase got between Chuck and the cancellation bear.  Last night Chuck's 1.9 rating with adults 18-49 was flat with last week's overnight rating (though last week it bumped up to a 2.0 in the final numbers).  Chase dropped from a 2.1 preliminary adults 18-49 rating last week to a 1.7 last night. Chase wasn't helped out by The Event dropping from a 2.9 last week all the way down to a 2.4 this week.

Lie To Me's premiere was modest, though 22% better than its summer average, and more than 100% better than last week's 1.0 for Lone Star.  House rose 0.1 with adults 18-49 from last week to a 3.9.

CBS saw declines with How I Met Your Mother (down 0.4 to a 3.4 adults 18-49), Rules of Engagement (down 0.2 to a 3.0 with adults 18-49) and Two and a Half Men (down 0.3 to a 4.5 adults 18-49 rating) but Mike & Molly was up 0.1 with adults 18-49 and Hawaii Five-0 was flat vs. last week's preliminary number.

Over on the CW  Gossip Girl saw season highs in adults 18-34 (1.8/5), women 18-34 (2.8/7) and total viewers (2.1mil), but note that in Miami Monday Night Football ran on the local CW affiliate so the numbers could change in the finals.

Late-Night Metered Markets via NBC:

  • In Nielsen's 56 metered markets, household results were: "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," 2.7/7; CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman," 2.9/7; and ABC's combo of "Nightline," 3.5/8; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 1.6/5 with an encore.
  • In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” 0.7/3; "Late Show," 0.9/4; "Nightline," 1.1/5; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 0.6/3 with an encore.
  • At 12:35 a.m., "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" (1.3/5 in metered-market households) trailed CBS's "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" (1.5/5).  In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, "Late Night" (0.4/3 in 18-49) trailed "Late Late Show" (0.5/3).
  • At 1:35 a.m., Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 0.7/3 in metered-market households with an encore and a 0.2/2 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.
Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
