NBC Shuts Down Production on 'Outlaw'

NBC has shut down production on the low-rated Outlaw that airs Fridays at 10pm, but plans to continue to air it at least for the next few weeks.

Eight episodes of the show have been produced and only three have aired so far leaving five in the can.  NBC says it will evaluate Outlaw's performance over the next few weeks.  Barring a miraculous ratings turnaround (it's last two episodes garnered 1.1 and 1.0 adults 18-49 ratings respectively)  it looks like production has shut down for good.
Outlaw is produced by Conan O'Brien's Conaco.

    Not surprised.

Well, as Gomer Pyle would say:

    Suprise, suprise, suprise.

Looks like the Cancellation Bear is getting ready for it’s first course at the NBC restaurant.

  4. Jim

I wonder if NBC was required to produce eight episodes under its settlement with O’Brien.

  5. SJ

And there’s the third cancellation of the season!

  6. @jim, who knows what the deal was, but considering that Outlaw premiered a week early, I don’t think it’s surprising that they’d finished eight episodes already.

As Captain Renault would say “I’m shocked! Shocked!”

As a non-Nielsen family, I’m wondering how much impact it would make to watch a show via video on demand versus watching live or DVR delayed? My thinking is… now, I have no vote. I’m assuming that the cable company has some level of reporting to the networks about VOD viewership. Granted, I have only CBS, CW and NBC available from broadcast and Syfy, FX and USA from the cable shows I watch but I could still, at least, do something. Any thoughts?

    @Bill Gorman
Yeah. One Tree Hill premiered a week early and I know they started shooting episode 9 today.
That cancellation bear is probably going to get more than his fair share of nourishment before he enters winter hibernation.

Wow, nine comments and not one mention of Chuck. I’m shocked.

  11. Brad

SO glad its Outlaw and not Chuck!

I’m glad it’s outlaw and not Chuck but considering the overall ratings fr every network but CBS on Friday I didn’t think Outlaw was in that bad of shape. I expected them to at least get through 13 episodes.

  13. Jenn

I think Robert and Bill need to get some photoshop for these. I’d love to see a bear lunging for Jimmy Smits.

  14. At this rate, I’ll be watching The Cape sooner than expected.

    @ leroy
The best comment of the decade! :D

  16. tango

I’m not surpised, Outlaw is pure dreckitude.

  17. Arpajon: currently On Demand viewing isn’t currently counted in the Nielsen ratings so even if the networks collect all the set top box data (and based on reports from NBC it doesn’t add up to much viewing) there’s no revenue benefit. I think that will change next year when Nielsen starts measuring online, and I believe On Demand viewing Live+3 days so long as the same national commercials that aired live are included.

  18. Jenn, our photoshop skills would make South Park seem like a Monet.

  19. Lisa

The show is crap, but I’m glad it will apparently play out its remaining episodes. It’s pretty amusing. The second and third episodes weren’t as hilariously awful as the pilot, but they were still terrible. I need at least one fun “train wreck” series each season.

While Smits was fine as part of the NYPD ensemble it seems his string of crashes as the leading man may have brought that phase of his career to a halt.
