Last week I recommended you program your DVRs for Luther, but also  warned you not to expect anywhere near the 5.8 million who watched the premiere of Luther on the BBC in the UK last May.

Luther averaged 191,000 viewers on BBCA last Sunday between 10p-11:15.   For the week ending October 17, BBCA averaged 153,000 viewers.  So Luther was above average, but not hugely so.  By comparison, Law & Order: UK on Friday, October 15 averaged 271,000, the episode of Top Gear on Monday October 11 averaged 295,00 and (and I am not making this up) My Big Breasts and Me on Wednesday, October 13 averaged 225,000.  Luther’s premiere was next up after that, so it was BBCA’s fourth best performer of the week.

I think this is just one of the many examples of how difficult, and expensive it is to market shows, especially on smaller cable channels.  BBC America is available in almost 69 million homes in the U.S. Most of the bigger basic cable networks are available in close to 100 million homes.
