Fox Now 17% Behind Last Year’s Adults 18-49 Ratings; CW, NBC, CBS Still Ahead

After five weeks of the 2010-11 broadcast season, the season to season ratings comparisons are getting worse for Fox. They're now down 16.6% in adults 18-49 ratings vs. last season.

Unfortunately for them the NLCS this season didn't rate nearly as highly as the ALCS last season (no Yankees!). The trend seem certain to get worse as they get hit by the bad year to year comparisons between the World Series. Last year they got 6 games with the Yankees. All they can hope for this season is as many games as possible. The Yankees are watching from home.

Fox had a big Fall in 2009, when it didn't, as usual, go into the holiday season trailing in the ratings. Baseball was one of the reasons. This season they seem to be returning to their patter of a relatively weak Fall. Lucky for them, they have the Super Bowl in February.

CBS (0.8%), CW (2.6%) and NBC's (3.6%) adults 18-49 ratings are all still ahead of last season's. NBC is spending a lot more this season after replacing 5 hours of The Jay Leno Show with mostly scripted dramas. The CW is probably spending ~ 11% more after replacing an hour of repeats with an hour of scripted drama.

ABC is 7.6% behind last season's adults 18-49 ratings, which is a slight improvement from the comparison last week.

Univision continues well ahead (13.7%) of last season's adults 18-49 ratings.

Broadcast network season ratings overall: My calculation (not Nielsen's) of the average adults 18-49 ratings season to date for the 5 English broadcast networks is 3.9% below the season to date ratings average through week 5 of the 2009-10 season.

CBS maintains its season lead in primetime adults 18-49 ratings for the season after five weeks averaging a 3.3 rating. NBC is now alone in second place with a 2.9 adults 18-49 ratings average. Fox and ABC are tied in third with a 2.8 rating average.

CBS remains well ahead in the press release friendly season to date average viewership.

Each rating point is a percentage of the US TV population in that demographic group and equals: a 1.0 adults 18-49 rating equals 1.315 million adults 18-49

The network's average viewership is charted in millions of viewers, just like we report all other average viewership information on the site, and adults 18-49 is charted as ratings points. Note the units (million viewers on the left, rating on the right) below the bars.

Note that these season average ratings are "Most Current" measurements which are Live+7 day DVR viewing when available (2+ weeks after airdate), combined with LIve+Same Day DVR viewing for the most recent 2 weeks.
