Network press releases constantly tout their shows "winning" this or that. Timeslots, nights, demos, whatever. We always remind folks that those "wins" are pretty much entirely PR events. The networks make their advertising money based on their absolute adults 18-49 ratings, "winning" gains them nothing but good press.
Still, one of the most popular fan bingo card excuses (or laments) for a failing show is "It wins it's timeslot!"
As Dr. Phil might say, "How's that working out for Medium?"
Medium "won" its timeslot's adults 18-49 ratings against broadcast competition every Friday this season but two. Yet, even with a lucrative syndication deal that reduced the effective cost of the show, its season order was cut down to 13 episodes, indicating the show was certain to be cancelled.
Keep that in mind the next time you read a press release about "winning" or skip past the endless fan comments about the same.
