“World News” Posts Largest Weekly Total Viewing Advantage Over CBS in Two Years

For the week of December 6, 2010, “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” averaged 8.40 million Total Viewers and a 1.9 rating/7 share/2.32 million among Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research.

“World News” attracted its largest weekly audience since February. On Monday (12/6/10) “World News” turned in its most-watched telecast among Total Viewers (8.92 million) in over 8 months – since 3/8/10. In addition, “World News” saw the greatest weekly increases in both Total Viewers (+5%) and Adults 25-54 (+6%) compared to its competition.

Compared to the prior week, “World News” narrowed both the Total Viewing and demo gaps with “NBC Nightly News” to the smallest margins since October. Year to Year, “World News” narrowed the Total Viewing gap with NBC by 9% and among Adults 25-54 by 5%.

For the week, World News” outperformed “CBS Evening News” by 2.40 million Total Viewers, marking ABC’s largest total viewing advantage in over two years (w/o 11/17/08). In addition, “World News” increased its week-to-week lead among Adults 25-54 (490,000) to the largest margin since February (w/o 2/8/10). Year to year, “World News” increased its Total Viewing and demo advantages over CBS by 20% and 4% respectively.

Throughout the week, George Stephanopoulos, Martha Raddatz, and Nick Schifrin filed reports for the division-wide series “Afghanistan: Can We Win?” “World News” also covered the ongoing debate over the extension of the Bush-era tax cuts and the arrest of the controversial founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange. In addition, the broadcast remembered Elizabeth Edwards, who passed away on Tuesday, December 7, 2010. Jon Banner is the executive producer of “ABC World News.”
