ABC chief Paul Lee said at today's ABC executive session at the TCA's that he hopes Detroit 1-8-7 comes back but that the decision is months away. Translation: it's absolutely, positively not coming back next season but there is absolutely, positively no upside to Paul Lee admitting that. I don't think this is a case of fostering false hope with fans, just that there is no upside to announcing now and there is downside in terms of discouraging advertisers and viewers.
There's also no upside for him to comment on just how bad the ratings for Detroit 1-8-7 are (it's ABC's worst scripted performer among remaining shows), but hey, that's what we're here for.
Far more interesting, but perhaps not very surprising is ABC's interest in a second night of comedy. It makes a lot of sense to me especially considering ABC's failure at launching new one hour dramas. When one hour dramas fail, it's a more expensive failure.
