Ratings Notes for TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network; Including 'Conan,' 'Southland,' 'The Closer' Live+7 & More

TNT
TNT and TBS’s live simulcast of the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards® delivered a combined audience of more than 5 million viewers, with 2,820,000 viewers for TNT and 2,185,000 viewers for TBS, up 6% over last year.

The combined TNT and TBS demo deliveries for the simulcast scored strong gains compared to last year’s simulcast:
Adults 18-34: 1,163,000 (+30%)
Adults 18-49: 2,181,000 (+13%)
Adults 25-54: 2,238,000 (+8%)

Individually, both networks delivered growth in their respective key demos.  TNT averaged 1.2 million adults 18-49, up 25%, and 1.3 million adults 25-54, up 18%.  TBS averaged 542,000 adults 18-34, up 11%, while its delivery of adults 18-49 (934,000) was up slightly.

Tuesday night’s episode of TNT’s acclaimed series Southland delivered 2.2 million viewers, its highest Live + Same Day delivery of the season.  The episode also scored 1.1 million adults 25-54.  Compared to the previous week’s episode, Southland was up 4% among viewers and 10% among adults 25-54.

For the third season so far, Southland has averaged more than 2 million viewers and 941,000 adults 25-54 in Live + Same Day.  Those figures are expected to rise significantly when final time-shifted viewing is included.  According to Live + 7 data for Jan. 11, that night’s episode grew its audience an outstanding 57% over Live + Same Day for a total of 2.6 million viewers, while adults 25-54 grew 62% to 1.3 million.

TNT’s The Closer scored basic cable’s #1 and #2 scripted series telecasts of the month in total viewers, with the Dec. 27 episode topping the list with 8.3 million viewers in Live + 7 viewing and the Jan. 3 season finale coming in a close second with over 8.2 million.

With Live + 7 data available now for the Jan. 10 winter finale of TNT’s Men of a Certain Age, the episode’s audience grew 59% over Live + Same Day to 2.6 million viewers, with adults 25-54 growing 57% to 1.3 million.  For the winter, the acclaimed series averaged more than 3 million viewers and 1.4 million adults 25-54.  The series is slated to return this summer.

Through 32 games, the NBA on TNT is averaging a 1.5 U.S. household rating (+25% vs. 1.2 for last year’s corresponding coverage); 2,325,000 total viewers (+31% vs. 1,774,000); and 1,730,000 households (+28% vs. 1,348,000).

Adult Swim
Across January 2011, Adult Swim ranked #1 for Total Day delivery of young adults 18-34adults 18-24men 18-34 and men 18-24.  Compared to January 2010, adults 18-34 delivery (497,000) grew by 4%, adults 18-24 delivery (269,000) grew by 8%, men 18-34 delivery (314,000) grew by 13%, men 18-24 delivery (175,000) grew by 18%.  Additionally, Adult Swim ranked #2 for Total Day delivery of adults 18-49 (behind USA), with average delivery (701,000) growing by 7%.

Premiere episodes of the long-running Family Guy (Monday, 11 p.m.) charted significant delivery increases across all young adult demos: adults 18-34 delivery (1,321,000) grew by18%, adults 18-24 delivery (711,000) grew by 5%, men 18-34 delivery (847,000) grew by 23%, men 18-24 delivery (479,000) grew by 12%, and adults 18-49 delivery (1,862,000) grew by17%.

Premiere episodes of the Adult Swim original series Robot Chicken (Sunday, 11:45 p.m.) posted solid increases among adults 18-49 (934,000/ up 8%) and men 18-49 (612,000/ up 12%).

TBS
Conan
was watched by 616,000 adults 18-34 last week, up an outstanding 22% compared to the prior week.  The show also scored 894,000 adults 18-49, up 16%, and a total audience of more than 1.2 million viewers, up 15%.  For the week, this powerhouse hit for young adults boasted a median age of 31.

Competitively for the prior week (Jan. 17-20), Conan once again ranked as television’s #1 late-night talk show among adults 18-34 (506,000).  The show’s median age (32) tied with TBS’s Lopez Tonight as late-night’s youngest.

According to the latest Live + 7 data, Conan continues to attract a sizeable number of young adults through time-shifted viewing.  In Conan’s first week of 2011 (Jan. 10-13), the show grew its delivery of adults 18-34 to a top-ranked 669,000, 32% over Live + Same Day.  The week’s audience also grew 27% among adults 18-49 for a final delivery of 1 million and 24% among total viewers for a final tally of 1.3 million.  The show’s median age (32) for the week was the youngest among late-night talk shows.

Last week, Lopez Tonight averaged 317,000 adults 18-34, a 63% jump over the previous week.  Delivery of adults 18-49 grew 45% to 442,000, while delivery of total viewers was up 32% to 657,000.  The show scored a median age of only 31.

Cartoon Network
Cartoon Network’s January 2011 performance out-paced its December 2010 performance across all kids demos in early evening prime time: average kids 6-11 delivery (515,000) and kids 2-11 delivery (782,000) both increased by 1%, while average kids 9-14 delivery (374,000) increased by 4%.  Ratings across the board remained unchanged.  The network’s total day performance also saw month over month gains, with average kids 6-11 delivery (328,000) gains of 3%, kids 2-11 delivery (514,000) gains of 1% and kids 9-14 delivery (240,000) gains of9%.  Total day ratings for kids 6-11 and kids 2-11 remained unchanged, while kids 9-14 ratings (1.0) grew by 11%.

The network’s Monday night animated comedies (7-9 p.m.) also attracted significant delivery growth among all kids and boys demos over the month compared to January last year—average kids 6-11 delivery (593,000) grew by 1%, kids 2-11 delivery (892,000) grew by 2%, kids 9-14 delivery (445,000) grew by 13%, boys 6-11 delivery (457,000) grew by 8%, boys 2-11 delivery (643,000) grew by 13% and boys 9-14 delivery (342,000) grew by 22%.

Adventure Time (Monday, 8 p.m.) earned outstanding double-digit growth across the board vs. the same time period last year, with delivery and ratings gains ranging between 24% and 68%.  Average kids 6-11 delivery (786,000) improved by 36%, kids 2-11 delivery (1,101,000) improved by 29%, kids 9-14 delivery (594,000) improved by 50%, boys 6-11 delivery (620,000) improved by 54%, boys 2-11 delivery (813,000) improved by 42% and boys 9-14 delivery (467,000) improved by 68%.  Regular Show (Monday, 8:15 p.m.) earned even larger gains vs. last year’s time period—kids 6-11 delivery (785,000) increased by 42%, kids 2-11 delivery (1,083,000) increased by 31%, kids 9-14 delivery (631,000) increased by 61%, boys 6-11 delivery (635,000) increased by 63%, boys 2-11 delivery (816,000) increased by 47% and boys 9-14 delivery (508,000) increased by 76%.

Wednesday night’s alternative live-action series DUDE, WHAT WOULD HAPPEN (8 p.m.) scored solid improvement as well vs. the same time period last year: kids 6-11 delivery (529,000) grew by 11%, kids 2-11 delivery (682,000) grew by 4%, kids 9-14 delivery (377,000) grew by 13%, boys 6-11 delivery (417,000) grew by 11%, boys 2-11 delivery (516,000) grew by 5% and boys 9-14 delivery (279,000) grew by 5%.  Immediately following, Destroy Build Destroy (8:30 p.m.) also charted kids 6-11 delivery gains of 7% (433,000), kids 2-11 delivery gains of 8% (556,000), kids 9-14 delivery gains of 11% (351,000), boys 2-11 delivery gains of 3% (418,000), and boys 9-14 delivery gains of  3% (267,000).

Cartoon Network’s Friday night line-up of animated action-adventure series captured double-digit growth among older kids and boys vs. last year’s time period: average kids 9-14 delivery (460,000) expanded by 14% and ratings (1.9) by 12%, while boys 9-14 delivery (377,000) and ratings (3.0) both expanded by 20%.  Among the individual programs, YOUNG JUSTICE (7 p.m.) scored 37% growth among kids 9-14 delivery (539,000) and 38% among ratings (2.2), and 45% growth among boys 9-14 delivery (424,000) and 48% among ratings (3.4).  BEN 10: ALIEN FORCE (7:30 p.m.) achieved 7% growth among kids 9-14 delivery (407,000), and 19% growth among boys 9-14 delivery (344,000).  Similarly, STAR WARS: The Clone Wars (8:30 p.m.) improved kids 9-14 delivery (609,000) by 14%, and boys 9-14 delivery (521,000) by 21%.

On Saturday mornings, new episodes of POKÉMON: DP SINNOH LEAGUE (8 a.m.) earned 12% delivery improvement among kids 9-14 (341,000) and 15% improvement among boys 9-14 delivery (283,000).

truTV
Coming off a successful 2010, truTV continued its momentum in January 2011, ranking among basic cable’s Top 10 networks in delivery of men 18-49 (353,000).

truTV continues to successfully attract a younger audience.  Its primetime median age during January (44.1) was the network’s youngest since the January 2008 re-branding and is now six years younger than it was at that time.

Leading the network in January was the hit series Hardcore Pawn, which is scoring superb growth over its first season.  In addition, the Jan. 11 episode became truTV’s most-watched telecast ever in delivery of men 18-34 (406,000) and men 18-49 (851,000).  That made Jan. 11 the most-watched Tuesday night in the network’s history among key male and adult demos.

Several other original series scored well for truTV in January, with Full Throttle Saloon and truTV Presents: World’s Dumbest… ranking among the Top 5 entertainment programs in their time periods in delivery of key demos.

NBA TV
NBA TV continues to deliver strong audiences for its signature Tuesday night program Fan Night. Through the first 13 Fan Night games of the season, the network is averaging 383,000 total viewers and 292,000 households.  This season, more than 6.3 million viewers have watched Fan Night on NBA TV through Jan. 25.

The network’s Feb. 1 Fan Night game will feature the Houston Rockets at the Los Angeles Lakers winning with 49-percent of the fan vote on NBA.com. The game will air on Tues., Feb. 1, at 10:30 p.m. (ET), with host Ernie Johnson and analysts Chris Webber and Kevin McHale on-hand for studio coverage beginning at 10 p.m. (ET).
