Unlike many other sporting championships which have declined over time, Super Bowl TV viewership has not only held up well, but after a generation of fairly flat viewership, began growing again in the last five years or so. Last year's Super Bowl XLIV had the highest average viewership (106.476 million) ever.
Will there be another record this year?
Factors that may increase this year's viewership:
- Increased regular season NFL TV ratings
- Two iconic franchises (Green Bay, Pittsburgh)
- Bad weather (could keep Nielsen families at home where they are counted vs. in a bar where they aren't)
Factors that may decrease this year's viewership:
- Game competitiveness. The last three Super Bowls were competitive most of The Game. A game that gets lopsided early would likely fail to set a record.
- Less known quarterbacks. Aaron Rodgers of the Packers and Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers are not Peyton Manning, Tom Brady or TV ratings magnet Brett Favre.
- No struggle vs. adversity story. Not sure how much I buy that the New Orleans/Saints/Katrina story drove ratings last year, but regardless, it's absent this year.
Assuming a competitive game, I'd expect another viewership record, so I'll guess 108 million.
What's your guess?
