Live+7 DVR Ratings: 'Fringe' Again Tops % Gains, 'Modern Family' Leads Absolute Gains

February 28th, 2011

Our source for Live+7 DVR ratings includes only original, regular programs, excluding both repeats (which are unlikely to be heavily DVR viewed) and "specials". There were 78 such programs in the complete data for the week, which is effectively a full schedule of new broadcast episodes.

The twenty-first week of the broadcast season (February 7-13) found Modern Family and Fringe on top our rankings for the week's DVR viewing added between the Live+Same Day period reported in all our other ratings posts and the Live + 7 Day measurement periods.

Modern Family lead all shows for adults 18-49 ratings added after airdate via DVR viewing, adding 1.7 adults 18-49 ratings points to its Live+Same Day adults 18-49 ratings. That's the most any show has added this season (tieing a previous MF mark).

Fringe again topped the % adults 18-49 ratings increase from DVR viewing, adding 64% to its Live+Same Day adults 18-49 ratings. Fans hoping that big % increases on low Live+Same Day ratings might save their shows should note that three of the top six % ratings gainers from DVR viewing this season are Good Guys, The Event and Outlaw. So much for that having helping them prevent cancellation. (I know The Event hasn't been cancelled. Yet.)

Modern Family also topped the absolute average viewership gained from DVR viewing, adding 3.300 million average viewers via DVR viewing between the Live+Same Day and Live + 7 day measurement periods.

Do the Live+7 ratings tell us anything about a show's renewal prospects we didn't already know from the Live+SD ratings?  No.  Click here to learn more.

The average viewership increase From DVR Viewing ranks which of the top broadcast shows [by Live+7 viewers] had the largest absolute increase in average viewership by DVR between the Live + Same Day and Live + 7 day ratings measurements.

-

Definitions:

DVR (Time-shifted) Adults 18-49 Ratings – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data LiveLive+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs.

Live+Same Day(Live+SD) ratings include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.

Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

DVR Ratings Increase Past Airdate - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate

Until the 2009-2010 season, we used a show's LIVE program rating or viewership as the base upon which the LIVE+7 day DVR viewing was added. Now, the press seems to be standardizing around using LIVE+SAME DAY DVR viewing as the base for the calculations, so that's what we do now as well.
