After more than a three month hiatus, NBC's The Event returns tonight with two new episodes between 8-10pm, leading in to a new Harry's Law.
When last seen, The Event's ratings had plummeted from the high numbers of the premiere to below a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating (a 1.9 rating for the November 29 episode). Of course as Bill Carter at The New York Times notes, NBC hasn't exactly been on fire since then. Sad as NBC is, that 1.9 rating doesn't look nearly as bad now as it did in November.
Carter quotes Lost producer Carlton Cuse, who I think sums up the situation very well:
“The Event” was facing a daunting challenge. The show got its start in the fall, accompanied by a mounting promotion and marketing campaign, Cuse said. “They are coming back without those benefits and with the image of being a struggling show, and with people at the network who weren’t there when they were launched,” he said.
I think it's a fairly safe bet that The Event will return to better numbers than The Cape had been pulling at 9pm (last week, a 1.2 adults 18-49 rating), and that should be good news for Harry's Law which also benefits Monday night because Hawaii Five-0 and Castle are repeats.
As far as ratings predictions, my guess is that over the two hours, The Event will average a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating.
