When it comes to bubble status, like the Renew/Cancel Index we're focusing on the likelihood that a show will be renewed for next season (2011-12). Certain shows are toss-ups where based on the ratings, the renewal decisions could go either way and not be surprising.
Notes for the week:
Mr. Sunshine's ratings were downright awful up against American Idol and with a repeat Modern Family as a lead-in, but it was up against American Idol without a new Modern Family as a lead-in, so it stays on the bubble for now. With ABC mulling a second comedy block, it could stay on the bubble until May.
Brothers & Sisters rebounded a bit on Sunday, but I'm not as optimistic as the Renew/Cancel Index so I'm not bumping it back on to the bubble yet. Look for Bubble Watch and the the Renew/Cancel Index to be out of sync for a while since there won't be any new episodes of Brothers & Sisters airing until April.
Lie To Me is moving back to the bubble, but I lack the energy today to explain why it would be on the bubble while The Chicago Code would still be likely to be canceled, so they are both still "likely to be canceled" in the list below. The rare occasion where I get to have my cake and eat it too!
The Event probably should be downgraded from "likely to be canceled" to "certain to be canceled," but I'll give it a second Monday before making that change.
I love me some The Good Wife, but to the intellectually superior snarkers who are always kvetching that there's no way that The Good Wife should be on the bubble:
- on the bubble doesn't mean likely to be canceled
- CBS can and does clear out several of its lower-rated dramas each season, even if they have a gazillion total viewers. The Good Wife is CBS's lowest-rated bubble show that isn't on a Friday. Tell me again why The Good Wife shouldn't be on the bubble? Yeah, yeah the critical acclaim! But guess what? That's why it's "on the bubble" instead of "likely to be canceled!"
