Following a new episode hiatus for "retooling" that began in early December, Law & Order: Los Angeles returns with a new two hour episode tonight.
I was a bit surprised by its removal from the line up. Through the end of calendar 2010 it was averaging almost exactly the NBC primetime scripted show average adults 18-49 rating (2.2 adults 18-49 rating average, and also the show's last new episode rating). Average rated shows aren't typically candidates for rehabilitation. Maybe Dick Wolf shows are different.
Whatever the reason, the show's been out of new episodes for eighteen weeks (although its limited episodes have been absolutely beaten to death in repeats on Saturdays) and it returns to an NBC Monday line up that, to put it charitably, has been woefully rated this spring.
Will the retooling boost its ratings compared to the Fall? Will viewers trained to avoid NBC at 9pm on Mondays suddenly return? Do fans even remember the show?
You be the judge.
