Local DC Ratings for Washington Capitals Playoff Game 1 Up 21% Vs. 2010

Last night’s first game of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals was the second highest-rated Washington Capitals playoff game for Comcast SportsNet in the DC market and topped last year’s first game of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals by 21%.

2011 Capitals Eastern Conference Quarterfinals Ratings Notes:

  • Comcast SportsNet’s coverage of Game 1 of the Capitals-Rangers 2011 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals (April 13) posted a 6.18 average household rating in the Washington DMA, making it the second-highest Capitals rating in network history, behind only Game 7 of last year’s first-round series vs. Montreal (8.10).
    • The Game 1 Washington DMA average household rating equates to approximately 145,000 homes, which, when combined to the average Baltimore DMA audience of roughly 34,000 households (2.67), brings the average Game 1 audience to approximately 179,000 area homes.
    • Game 1 on Comcast SportsNet earned peak household ratings of 7.85 in the Washington DMA and 3.20 in the Baltimore DMA during overtime, which equates to a combined peak audience of approximately 225,000 area homes.
    • The Washington DMA average household rating of 6.18 surpassed Game 1 of the Capitals 2010 opening-round series by 21 percent (5.10), the previous network record for a Game 1, and beat the 2010 seven-game average rating by 16 percent (5.34), the network’s current all-time playoff series mark.
    • In key Washington DMA demographics, the game posted an average rating of 6.36 among Men 25-54, a 5.03 in Adults 25-54 and a 6.35 in Men 18-49, increases versus Game 1 of the 2010 Capitals first-round series of eight percent, 22 percent and 24 percent, respectively.

2010-11 Capitals Regular-Season Ratings Notes:

  • In 70 games on Comcast SportsNet, the Capitals earned a network record Washington DMA average household rating of 1.78 (which equates to approximately 42,000 Washington-area homes), an increase of 12 percent compared to the 2009-10 season, the previous all-time high.
    • The Capitals full-season Washington DMA household average represents a 66 percent improvement over the 2008-09 season (1.07) and an increase of 196 percent vs. 2007-08 (0.60).
    • The network’s Capitals coverage posted major growth in key Washington demographics versus last season, posting increases of 26 percent in Adults 18-49 (1.23) and 23 percent in Men 18-49 (1.58).
  • In the Baltimore DMA, Comcast SportsNet’s 70-game regular-season Capitals schedule earned an average household ratings increase of 42 percent over the 2009-10 season.
  • The Capitals on Comcast SportsNet attracted an all-time high average audience of approximately 54,000 Washington/Baltimore-area homes over 70 games during the 2010-11 regular season, an increase of approximately 20 percent over the 2009-10 combined average (45,000).
