ABCNews.com Experienced Largest Day for Total Traffic Since 2008 Election Day

On Friday, April 29, ABC News provided viewers with an all-access pass to the Royal Wedding on the ABC Television Network and across a diverse group of digital platforms:

 

Live Royal Wedding Coverage

In its regular 7:00 – 9:00 a.m. time period ABC’s “Good Morning America,” anchored live by Diane Sawyer and Barbara Walters, covering the Royal Wedding from Buckingham Palace, attracted 8.65 million Total Viewers and a 2.6 rating/3.28 million in Adults 25-54, marking the ABC morning news program’s most-watched telecast in nearly 20 yearssince at least September of 1991, pre-dating Nielsen’s electronic database.  “GMA” also scored its strongest Adults 25-54 performance in 6 1/2 years (since 11/3/04) and 3rd-highest overall in the adult news demo since at least September 1991. Further, “GMA” saw its largest-ever Adults 25-54 Friday audience since at least September 1991.

 

ABC News special “GMA” coverage of the Royal Wedding from 4:00 – 10:00 a.m. averaged 6.15 million viewers and 1.9 rating/2.34 million Adults 25-54 over the six hours based on Nielsen’s “Fast National” ratings.

During its live morning coverage, ABC News set itself apart from the competition with its all-star team of anchors, correspondents, and special royal contributors. As the couple walked down the aisle on Diane Sawyer and Barbara Walters anchored special live coverage from Buckingham Palace and they were joined by a team of ABC News anchors and correspondents including: “Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts, “ABC World News” weekend anchor David Muir; “20/20” co-anchor Chris Cuomo; “Nightline” co-anchor Cynthia McFadden; “GMA Weekend” co-anchor Bianna Golodryga; ABC News London-based correspondents Nick Wattand Lama Hasan; and ABC News Special Royal Correspondent Katie Nicholl, author of “The Making of a Royal Romance: William, Kate, and Harry – A Look Behind the Palace Walls,” the definitive biography of Prince William and Prince Harry and columnist for The Daily Mail.

 

ABC News special royal contributors included: Tina Brown, author of “The Diana Chronicles” and Editor-in-Chief of Newsweek and The Daily Beast; Royal Insider Colleen Harris, who served as Press Secretary to Princes Charles, William, and Harry from 1998 to 2003; one of Princess Diana’s Bridesmaids, India Hicks; Royal Historian, Robert Lacey; and Royal Editor for the Sun Newspaper, Duncan Larcombe. Immediately following the wedding ceremonyDuncan Larcombe, who was seated just rows away from the Queen inside Westminster Abby, provided viewers with the first first-hand account of the nuptials.

 

 

A Special Edition of 20/20 (9:00-11:00pm)

From 9:00 -11:00 p.m., “A Special Edition of 20/20: A Modern Fairytale” attracted 6.7 million viewers and a 1.6 rating, 5 sharing in Adults 18-49, turning in the Net’s strongest numbers in the time period in nearly 4 months – since 12/31/10 and 1/7/11, respectively. Hosted by Barbara Walters, the special two-hour edition of “20/20” brought viewers a look back at the wedding watched by the world. 

 

Head-to-head in the time-slot, “20/20” outperformed NBC’s “Dateline” by 1.8 million viewers (6.7 million vs. 4.9 million) and by 33% in Adults 18-49 (1.6/5 vs. 1.2/4).  From its first hour to its second hour, “20/20” saw its audience grow in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, ranking #1 in the 10 o’clock hour in the key young adult demo.
