“GMA” Continues to Narrow Year-to-Year Total Viewer and Demo Gaps with “Today”

ABC News’ “Good Morning America” averaged 4.715 million Total Viewers and a 1.5/11/1.789 million in Adults 25-54 for the week of September 5, 2011. Growing week to week in both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 (4.705 million and 1.747 million, respectively, on w/o 8/29/11), “GMA” hit 15-week highs in both Nielsen measures – since w/o 5/23/11.


“GMA” built on its year-earlier performance by double-digits in both Total Viewers (+15%) and Adults 25-54 (+11%),delivering year-over-year gains in both demos for the 20th consecutive week.  In addition, “GMA” improved the most over Labor Day week last year (NBC: +6% and +4%, respectively; CBS: -1% and -4%, respectively).  Further, “GMA” extended its streak of year-to-year Total Viewer improvement to 35 weeks, and has been up in 48 of 51 weeks overall this season.


Season to date, “GMA” is up the most among the network morning news programs in both Total Viewers (+10%) and Adults 25-54 (+3%) versus its year-ago averages (NBC’s “Today” is up by +2% and by +2%, respectively; CBS’ “Early Show” is up by +1% and is flat, respectively), attracting its largest overall audience in 4 years – since the 2006-2007 season.


For the 6th week in a row, “GMA” narrowed its margins with “Today” from the same week last year in both Total Viewers (-29% - 719,000 vs. 1.01 million) and Adults 25-54 (-14% - 635,000 vs. 737,000).  “GMA” has lowered its year-over-year gap in Total Viewers with the NBC program in the last 13 weeks and in 46 of 51 weeks of the season to date. “GMA” also cut its Total Viewer gap season to date by double-digits (-32%), posting its smallest Total Viewer gap with the NBC program in 4 years – since the 2006-07 season.   


“GMA” bettered CBS’ “Early Show” by 89% in Total Viewers (4.715 million vs. 2.501 million) and by 82% in Adults 25-54 (1.789 million vs. 984,000).
