“GMA” Turns In Smallest Total Viewer Gap with NBC’s “Today” During a Premiere Week in 16 Years


“GMA” Posts Largest Overall Premiere Week Audience in 6 Years and 2nd Most-Watched Premiere Week in More Than 20 Years




With the start of the 2011-12 season, ABC News’ “Good Morning America” averaged 4.843 million Total Viewers and a 1.5/11/1.868 million in Adults 25-54 for the week of September 19, 2011. The ABC morning newscast surged from the year-ago premiere week by +22% in Total Viewers and by +15% in Adults 25-54 (3.965 million and 1.631 million, respectively, on w/o 9/20/10). Growing year to year for the 2nd year in a row, “GMA” attracted its largest overall premiere week audience in 6 years – since w/o 9/19/05.  In fact, it was the 2nd most-watch premiere week in more than 20 years, pre-dating Nielsen’s electronic database starting on September of 1991.    


“GMA” saw the most year-over-year opening week growth in Total Viewers and stood as the only network morning news program to improve year to year in the key adult news demo – NBC’s “Today” was up by +3% and was down -3, respectively; CBS’ “Early Show” was down by -5% and -6%, respectively. 


“GMA” substantially narrowed its margins with “Today” versus the year-ago premiere week by -65% in Total Viewers(397,000 vs. 1.129 million) and by -39% in Adults 25-54 (484,000 vs. 794,000).  In fact, decreasing its overall audience gap for the 2nd year in a row, “GMA” turned in its smallest Total Viewer gap with “Today” during premiere a week in 16 years – since w/o 9/18/95.   


“GMA” outperformed CBS’ “Early Show” by 2.397 million Total Viewers (4.843 million vs. 2.446 million) and by 896,000 Adults 25-54 (1.868 million vs. 972,000), scoring its largest opening week advantage in Total Viewers in 16 years – since w/o 9/19/95.
