NEW YORK – October 5, 2011 – BET Networks announces another record breaking year of ratings for its flagship channel, BET, as well as CENTRIC, which is now in its second year. According to the Nielsen Company, the 2010-11 season was the #1 season in BET’s history both for total day and primetime, with key gains among adults. A key driver for this strong season included BET’s incredible performance for its record breaking scripted content—THE GAME, which is the #1 sitcom in cable TV history and LET’S STAY TOGETHER, which is the #2 BET series of all time behind THE GAME season 4—and other returning hits such as SUNDAY BEST and 106 & PARK and specials like the BET AWARDS ‘11 continued to perform well. CENTRIC garnered its best primetime performance of all time, posting double-digit viewer gains.
Key highlights from the season include:
- The 2010-11 season ranked #1 in BET history;
- This is the third consecutive season to post audience gains for BET;
- BET maintains its position as the #1 ad-supported cable network among Black households for six consecutive seasons and the #1 ad-supported cable network among Blacks 18-49 for 11 consecutive seasons;
- BET continues to be cable’s #1 primetime network among Black viewers for seven consecutive seasons;
- BET ranks among the top five growth networks among Black viewers; and
- CENTRIC is now a top 10 growth networks in cable among total households.
BET’s original series continued to outperform both within their respective franchise and on cable. THE GAME, which debuted its season 4 on BET this season, has garnered more than 17 million viewers since its season premiere and is also the #1 series in BET history. BET’s original scripted series, LET’S STAY TOGETHER launched this season to an incredible 4.4 million total viewers and is now is the #2 BET series of all time behind THE GAME season 4. BET’s #1 reality series this season, SUNDAY BEST 4, posted double-digit gains versus all prior SUNDAY BEST seasons, had its highest ratings ever and remains the #1 gospel program on television for four years straight. BET’s newest reality competition series, BORN TO DANCE: LAURIEANNE GIBSON was the #1 dance competition series on cable in 2011.
During the 2010-11 BET season, BET’s music and specials programming also reigned supreme. The BET AWARDS ’11, the #1 Black family event on television, also remains the #1 program in cable TV history among Black viewers each year. The live premiere on Sunday June 26, 2011 garnered 7.7 million total viewers making it the #2 BET telecast of all time, according to the Nielsen Company. The BET AWARDS franchise continues to break records as the #1 program in cable television history among black households. After more than 10 years, 106 & PARK continues to dominate its genre as the #1 music variety show for the past 17 quarters among adults. BET HONORS ’11 has remained the #1 telecast on cable among Black households on its premiere night for the past 3 years. CELEBRATION OF GOSPEL ’11 was the #1 in its franchise history and remains the #1 religious/gospel special on television for the 11th consecutive year. RIP THE RUNWAY ranks as the #1 fashion themed telecast on TV among Blacks for the past seven years and BLACK GIRLS ROCK!, which made its worldwide television debut on BET this season, drew in 2.7 million viewers and more than tripled BET’s primetime time slot compared to the previous year.
BET’s acquisitions also delivered significant results to the network’s ratings success. For the 2010-11 season, BET had more movies among television’s top ten than any other network on television among Blacks. THE PARKERS return to BET has yielded strong results for the network posting double-digit viewership gains versus a year ago.
In its second year, CENTRIC delivered double-digit gains among its key demo, posting its best year ever for its first complete season: women (up +26%), adults 35 and older (up +25%), adults 18 and older (up +16%), adults 25-54 (up +15%) and adults 18-49 (up +14%). The SOUL TRAIN AWARDS ’10, which also premiered on BET, was the network’s #1 telecast ever and was viewed by a combined 4 million viewers. For the 2010-11 season, the network remained focused on its mission to deliver the classic hits its audience loves with the addition of THE COSBY SHOW and IN LIVING COLOR, which resulted in a +30% boost in the CENTRIC’s primetime rating. In addition, the R. KELLY LIGHT IT UP CONCERT was the #1 CENTRIC music special of the year.
On the digital side, BET continued to break records. In 2010-11, BET.com had the highest average monthly unique visitors and visits in its history and BET garnered a total social media footprint of over 16 million “likes” and followers on Facebook and Twitter combined. THE GAME’s Facebook page eclipsed 5.5 million “likes” and 106 & PARK has nearly 3 million followers. BET was named the #1 Social Cable Network by Trendrr.tv in June 2011 surrounding the BET AWARDS ’11. The June 26 live telecast also ranked as the #1 Social TV Show On Cable according to Trendrr.tv, with 7.5 million tweets having been sent during the 24 hour period surrounding the June 26 live telecast and BET mobile reached an all-time high of 1.15 million page views. In addition, BET’s 106 & PARK app, launched in March, has delivered more than 725,000 downloads to date.
