For the 5th Consecutive Week, “GMA” Cuts Year-to-Year Total Viewing and Demo Gaps with “Today”

 

“GMA” Posts Double-Digit Growth Year-to-Year in the Demo While NBC and CBS Decline

 

“GMA” Only Morning Show to Increase in Demo Season-to-Date and Up the Most

Among Total Viewers Versus Competitors

 

 

ABC News’ “Good Morning America” averaged 4.820 million Total Viewers and a 1.6/12/1.932 million in Adults 25-54 for the week of October 17, 2011.  Building on the previous week’s performance for the 2nd week in a row in both Total Viewers (+1%) and Adults 25-54 (+3%), “GMA” turned in its highest news demo number in over 4 months – since w/o 5/23/11.

 

“GMA” posted double-digit increases for the 5th time in 5 weeks of the season versus the year-ago week in both Total Viewers (+13%) and Adults 25-54 (+16%).  In fact, “GMA” improved the most year-to-year in overall viewers and stood as the only morning news program to grow in the key adult news demo (NBC’s “Today” was up by +4% and was down by -2%, respectively; CBS’ “Early Show” was down by -7% and by -7%, respectively).

 

For the 5th consecutive week this season, “GMA” substantially cut its gaps with “Today” from the year-earlier week in both Total Viewers (-44% - 440,000 vs. 790,000) and Adults 25-54 (-40% - 454,000 vs. 760,000).

 

Season to date, “GMA” narrowed its gaps in both Total Viewer (-52%) and Adults 25-54 (-36%) versus its year-ago season gaps for the 2nd year in a row, posting its smallest Total Viewer margin (444,000) with “Today” in 4 years – since the 2007-08 season.

 

“GMA” bettered CBS’ “Early Show” by 2.380 million Total Viewers (4.820 million vs. 2.440 million) and by 894,000 Adults 25-54 (1.932 million vs. 1.038 million), posting its largest advantages over the CBS program since premiere week 4 weeks ago – since w/o 9/19/11.

 

Season to date, “GMA” is up the most among the network morning news programs in Total Viewers (+14%) and stands as the only morning program to grow in Adults 25-54 (+13%) versus its year-ago averages (NBC’s “Today” is up by +2% and down by -2%, respectively; CBS’ “Early Show” is down by -5% and by -7%, respectively). “GMA” is attracting its largest overall season audience in 4 years – since the 2007-2008 season.

 

Emmy Award-winning “GMA,” featuring the anchor team of Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, Sam Champion, Lara Spencer and Josh Elliott, airs live Mon.-Fri. (7:00-9:00 a.m., ET) on ABC. James Goldston is senior executive producer and Tom Cibrowski is executive producer.
