Nearly 4.8 Million Total Viewers Watched Telemundo’s First Ever “2011 Billboard Mexican Music Awards"

MIAMI – October 28, 2011 – The first ever “2011 Billboard Mexican Music Awards presented by State Farm” reached a cumulative audience of 4,780,000 total viewers (persons 2+), including almost 2.8 million adults 18-49 when it aired on Telemundo last night, Thursday October 27, according to Nielsen.

The awards show, hosted by Mexican super star Kate del Castillo (“The Queen of the South”) and Mariachi music singer Pedro Fernandez, averaged 1,664,000 total viewers (persons 2+) and 950,000 adults 18-49. The red carpet pre-show “Alfombra Roja,” hosted by Mexican singer Lupillo Rivera and Telemundo hostess Monica Noguera, averaged 1.2 million total viewers 2+ and 652,000 adults 18-49 from 7-8pm.

The “2011 Billboard Mexican Music Awards presented by State Farm,” with performances by winners Gerardo Ortiz, Julion Alvarez y su Norteño Banda and Larry Hernandez, among many others, ranked among the top five highest rated entertainment specials in primetime in 2011, joining other high profile special events including “2011 Billboard Latin Music Awards Presented by State Farm” and “Miss Universo 2011.”

Locally, the “2011 Billboard Mexican Music Awards presented by State Farm” ranked #1 in Los Angeles and Miami among Spanish-language stations among men 18-34. The award show, as well as the red carpet event, were among the top 10 most talked about programs on Facebook and twitter in the U.S. regardless of language.

The three special awards of the 2011 Billboard Mexican Music Awards presented by State Farm provided some of the most emotional and heartfelt moments of the evening. Los Tucanes de Tijuana were awarded the “Premio Legado Musical,” in recognition of a lengthy and rich musical trajectory that has influenced the genre and its artists. Jenni Rivera received "El Premio de la Estrella," a special award that recognizes the achievements of a musical artist beyond the realm of the performance. Paquita la del Barrio was the recipient of Billboard’s inaugural “La Voz” (The Voice) award, given to an artist with a distinctive and unique on and off-stage persona.
