Season-to-Date, “GMA” Posts Smallest Total Viewer Margin with NBC’s “Today” in 16 Years

 

“GMA” Only Morning Program to Grow in Demo and Total Viewers Season-to-Date

 

“GMA” More Than Doubles Total Viewing Audience of CBS’ “This Morning”

 

 

ABC News’ “Good Morning America” attracted 4.817 Total Viewers and 1.6/11/1.927 million Adults 25-54 for the week of January 23, 2012.  The ABC morning newscast grew its news demo audience year to year by +2%.  “GMA” stood as the only morning newscast to improve on the year-ago week in Adults 25-54 (NBC’s “Today” was down -4%; CBS’ “This Morning” was down -11%).  In addition, “GMA” has posted year-to-year increases in the key adult news demo in 17 of 19 weeks this season.

 

**On Monday (1/23/12), “GMA” turned in its strongest Adults 25-54 telecast (2.189 million) in 8 months – since 5/2/11.

 

For the 4th week in a row, “GMA” decreased its year-ago margin with “Today” in Adults 25-54 (-22% - 548,000 vs. 703,000). In fact, “GMA” has narrowed its year-to-year demo margin with “Today” by double-digits in 18 of 19 weeks this season.  Additionally, “GMA” decreased its news demo margin with “Today” versus the prior week (-2% - 548,000 vs. 561,000).

 

Season to date, “GMA” narrowed its gaps in both Total Viewers (-36%) and Adults 25-54 (-39%) versus its year-ago season gaps.  In fact, “GMA” is posting its smallest Total Viewer margin (575,000) with “Today” in 16 years – since the 1995-96 Season.

 

“GMA” more than doubled the performance of “CBS This Morning” in Total Viewers (+101% - 4.817 million vs. 2.393 million), while substantially beating the CBS program in Adults 25-54 (+87% - 1.927 million vs. 1.033 million).  

 

Season to date “GMA” is the only  morning program to grow in Total Viewers (+7%) and Adults 25-54 (+9%) versus its year-ago averages (NBC’s “Today” is flat and down -6%, respectively; CBS’ “Early Show”/”This Morning” is down -10% and -12%, respectively). “GMA” is seeing its largest overall season audience in 4 years, since 2007-08.

 

Emmy Award-winning “GMA,” featuring the anchor team of Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, Sam Champion, Lara Spencer and Josh Elliott, airs live Mon.-Fri. (7:00-9:00 a.m., ET) on ABC. James Goldston is senior executive producer and Tom Cibrowski is executive producer.
