After its second episode Missing slid to a level that indicated likely cancellation,  and in its third it fell another tenth. Enjoy it while you can, it's not coming back.

GCB's 1.9 rating on Sunday still likely gets it renewed, but any lower than that and it's in "toss up" territory. Stay tuned.

Why is Cougar Town just a "toss up" with its dreadful ratings instead of "likely to be canceled" or worse? Because of past (negative) experience, I'm keeping shows in their third seasons (even shortened ones) no lower than a "toss up" because of potential syndication related benefits.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did ABC's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Missing is good and so is Boyd of Proof, come on, let them run!!

  • Peggy

I can not believe you are going to cancel GCB, MISSING, BODY OF PROOF & A GIFTED MAN. What is wrong with you people? There are a lot of people you like shows and not all the stupid reality stuff. The only good reality is DANCING WITH THE STARS, AMERICAN IDOL, THE VOICE & AMERICAS GOT TALENT. Please don’t cancel these shows, Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • over49

Missing is a very good show. well acted and fast paced.problem is it is up against american idol and big bang theory! ABC would have needed ot have “Lost” in that time slot to be comprtitive!! Renew this series and put it where it has a chance to suvcceed! America is getting dumbed down by reality series and mindless sitcoms!!

I am so tired of this. It has gotten to the point that I won’t invest emotionally in any scripted ABC show. The network is infamous for bad placement, moving shows around too much so that people can’t find them, and then pulling the plug before the shows can get traction. I have largely moved to cable programming. If I like a show on AMC or Lifetime, it’s MUCH more likely to be picked back up the next season. Missing is a really good show. I wish it had the chance to grow.

Not that ABC will read this, but you guys lost me largely as a viewer when you batted around, then cancelled Men in Trees. Sorry to see that nothing has changed.

“Missing” is a great show. I agree with “over49″; the show is well-acted and fast-paced. And the scenic locales are icing on the cake. I can’t believe this show is struggling. What the hell is wrong with people that they prefer to watch crap reality shows? (And yes, I most definitely include American Idol in that category!)

I suppose I’ll just have to take Bill’s advice: Watch it while I can. And (I guess) have a good long cry over the dumbing-down of American TV audiences.

  • Marie Wakter

I enjoy the show Missing very much–but the background music is terrible.

  • Nancy

What is wrong with you people?! I swear, a show is only on 2 or 3 or 4 weeks and then it’s cancelled. You don’t give it a chance! It’s very easy to explain why it’s not doing well at the moment — IT’S OPPOSITE AMERICAN IDOL which is LIVE, and people are anxious to see it LIVE with the results. I’m one of them. I love both shows, and I’m so glad to know I can watch Missing on On Demand. I’d watch them both at the same time if I could! It’s not fair. The minute American Idol ends, I’m watching Missing. Guess I’ll have to start taping AI and miss the live show, so I can watch Missing. I know my one vote won’t help, but it might if everybody does the same thing. Missing is an INCREDIBLY GOOD show! Wait ’til Idol goes off for the season and watch how many people watch Missing. It’s a very easy explanation. Save the show!!! You also took off Men in Trees which was a fantastic show. Everybody I know watched it — same with Missing — everybody is watching it, one way or another. GIVE IT A CHANCE!!! PLEASE!!!

  • Julie Snider

Hi, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Missing, don’t cancel, move it to a better time period for it…it’s great!!!

  • Tristen

Outrages. Getting an average of eight million viewer even when American Idol is on is super good. Most shows would not get this high of viewers when at the same time American Idol is on.

  • Walter

I agree, Missing is a great show. Keep it going!

  • mona

DONT CANCEL MISSING!!!!! I LOVE THAT SHOW!!

  • Carole

Seriously ABC, I gave you one last chance…you are always canceling good shows! Missing is great!! Love the characters, actors, plot, locations and everything else about it. Now I hear you are canceling Body Of Proof and maybe GCB, one of the funniest shows on tv! Body of proof is really good so I spent some time getting vested in it so of course you are getting rid of it! I have learned my lesson, do not watch shows on ABC, they will only cancel the good ones. Unbelievable!! Who is running this network? Do they only count such a small demographic? I am over 49 and watch a lot of tv…it just won’t be on ABC.

  • Carole

PS, ABC, you cancelled Off the Map….great show and Men in Trees…loved that one and the list goes on. Please hire all new programmers and listen to the people that watch these shows. I don’t believe people don’t want fast paced, well written shows! Has the dumming of America finally arrived. I can only hope the comments I have read here will also be read by ABC executives and that they listen to them and take action!

  • Otsego

None of you get how Network TV works do you? It’s all about the advertising. It has ALWAYS been about the advertising. The networks job is to create a show that will draw in the most viewers they can so they can shove ads in your face and make money. If the sponsors don’t think the ratings are high enough they won’t pay as much for the ad time. The networks hate losing money so they cut their losses, cancel the show and slip a new one in to try and get back to a decent enough rating. The CEO’s only care about the bottom line. They have no care in the world that people like a show with crap ratings.

  • Noa

I really enjoy Missing. I hope it doesn’t get cancelled. :(

  • Marie

WHAT!!!!! CANCEL MISSING! THIS SHOW IS GREAT…. WHATS WRONG WITH THIS NETWORK…CRAZY

  • The Coach

Cancel is the best show on Tv currently besides Big Bang Theory. Please dont cancel it.

  • The Coach

Missing is the best show on Tv currently besides Big Bang Theory. Please dont cancel it. Sorry..I like this show so much that i could not even write my coment properly

  • Bobby

why on earth would you think about canceling Missing and the river they are awsome shows. The shows you should be getting rid of that actually SUCK are GCB, Cougar Town, and all those stupid bachelor and bachelorette shows and now you want to bring back the Bachelor pad, give me a fricken break, you guys need to stop listening to this stupid women that like this crap and bring back comedy type shows the good ole shows like (home improvement , and family matters and step by step full house, shows like that are good holsom shows for everyone. and what happened to the show “ROB”

  • Bob

Give Missing a chance to catch on with viewers. Watching Missing is like going to a spy movie every week. It’s Jason Bourne with Ashley as David Webb.
