Each week we get plenty of comments from Ashton Kutcher anti-fans (or Charlie Sheen fans?)  of the "Two and a Half Men sucks now, next season will be its last," "Without Charlie Sheen the show is unwatchable" ilk.

But pans from anti-fans (or "critics") are irrelevant to the show's future, only the ratings matter, and since January, Two and a Half Men has been CBS' second highest rated show (after TBBT). I'm sure it wasn't renewed with the big batch of CBS shows a few weeks ago because Kutcher's giant payday is still being wrangled over, but it will be.

It's certain that CBS will cancel A Gifted Man and Unforgettable, as well as at least one of the CSI offspring (NY or Miami). More sitcom time could save Rules of Engagement and/or Rob, but without it, they're both likely gone too.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did CBS' shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

anybody seen the promo for anger management?

Two and Half men is just terrible sorry. Charlie Sheen was the show. I gave it a chance multiple times this season and it’s just not funny. Sheen interactions with his mom, brother, housekeeper and ex sister in law were the show. Now we get Kutcher acting like he’s 12 AND it’s lame. Show deserves to be canceled.

    @I like this show

I agreed, plus if we consider this year’s ratings the show was doing as well as 2 Broke Girls, which is only a 0.1 of difference. And Unforgettable should be renewed because retention out of NCIS:LA are much better than last year’s TGW. This morning ratings (1.7 out of a 2.3 rating) is a proof of that.

Weird, I can post and see comments on this article but they’re not showing up on some other ones. :|

I think CBS is going to add another hour of comedy…on Thursday. They’re airing Person of Interest at 10 this week to test it out. Next season, Person of Interest will probably move to Thursday @ 10 with The Mentalist moving to Friday @ 9, thus eliminating CSI: NY from the schedule…

he comments are all gone! And the Elimination Game has been hopelessly screwed up!

But fear not, fellow players…I am rebooting the game, with a new format and new rules.

All the shows in the Index, excluding those already canceled, will be listed with 10 points to start. But there is a twist…Instead of voting one show up and one show down, one point each, people may now vote for their three favorite and three least favorite shows, giving +3, +2, +1, -1, -2 and -3 points. (I will demonstrate this below.) For obvious reasons, this will only work if there are more than six shows to choose from, so when only five shows remain I will switch to a two-favorite, two-least favorite system, then to the classic one-favorite, one-least favorite format when only three shows remain. Also, when shows hit 100 points they will be “locked” as victors. If there are multiple victors then the game will reset so only the victors compete against each other. And I will keep meticulous records of when exactly shows either drop out of the game or become victors.

Other than that, the basic rules remain the same. Wait 24 hours between votes, etc. etc.

    Ready? Let’s go!

    A GIFTED MAN – 10
    CSI: NY – 10
    BLUE BLOODS – 10
    THE GOOD WIFE – 8 (-2)
    CSI: MIAMI – 10

With B.S. news releases, feature articles and so-called news outlets ALL reported that during this current season, Ashton Kutcher signed-on to replace Charlie Sheen becoming, as Charlie was, the highest-paid actor in television.

Now,am I clear in hearing that “Two-and-a-Half Men” is guaranteed renewal but they’re STILL negotiating with Kutcher??? Being the highest paid “star” in scripted programming his debut season is suddenly not good enough for a second season at the helm?

  • tvfreak

Oops, I -3’d two shows by mistake. I only meant to take -3 from CM. Let me fix:

    A GIFTED MAN – 10
    CSI: NY – 10

    THE GOOD WIFE – 8
    CSI: MIAMI – 10
    UNFORGETTABLE – 11
    THE MENTALIST – 12
    HAWAII FIVE-0 – 10
    CSI – 10

    NCIS – 13
    HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER – 9
    2 BROKE GIRLS – 10
    TWO AND A HALF MEN – 10
THE BIG BANG THEORY – 10

  • elmer

For Pete’s sake let’s bury the dead where they belong. Cancel the show already and let’s move on. Lorre and CBS you both blew it you should have worked with him ( Charlie Sheen) regardless or if not just quit. He could have been seen as the bad guy and not get ” Anger Management ” It’ like Andy Richter is a bad actor. And then, Andy Richter, ” my name ! ‘ Someone mentioned his name.

  • Mark

    To elmer; What?

  • eric

Still laugh my a** off at the reruns, but Ashton blows. Alan still pretty funny though, should have worked it out.

  • Rebecca

CBS already had game winners, though. Doing the game anyway? Here’s my vote, if we are:

    A GIFTED MAN – 10
    CSI: NY – 10
    BLUE BLOODS – 10
    THE GOOD WIFE – 8
    CSI: MIAMI – 10
    UNFORGETTABLE – 11
    THE MENTALIST – 12
    HAWAII FIVE-0 – 10
    CSI – 10
    RULES OF ENGAGEMENT – 11 (+1)
    NCIS: LOS ANGELES – 10
    CRIMINAL MINDS – 7
    PERSON OF INTEREST – 10
    ROB – 9 (-1)
    MIKE & MOLLY – 10
    NCIS – 13
    HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER – 12 (+3)
    2 BROKE GIRLS – 7 (-3)
    TWO AND A HALF MEN – 8 (-2)
    THE BIG BANG THEORY – 12 (+2)

    quote from TBBT [5.17]:
Amy: Before I met you, I was a mousy wallflower. But look at me now. I’m like some kind of downtown hipster party girl! With a posse, a boyfriend, and a new lace bra that hooks in the front of all things!

  • Lewis

After this season Rules of Engagement will be at 87 episodes. Don’t you think they renew it for 1 more season to get it to 88 (and 100 for that matter) episodes? It’s not like they’re losing money on the show.

I think the new Two and a Half Men is hilarious! I was/am a huge Charlie Sheen fan, as far as that show is concerned, and I was honestly worried that the show would suck with Ashton Kutcher. However, I was pleasantly surprised – as were many other people judging by the ratings – at how well Kutcher filled the role. The show is just as funny/witty as it was with Charlie Sheen. It was time for the show to move on in another direction anyway. With Ashton the show could easily survive another 5-7 seasons, or more, but with Charlie the show only had another 2-3 seasons at best. Good job CBS!
