Two seasons ago I was cheered as Melrose Place brought back the lovely (and my age peer) Heather Locklear in an attempt to save the ratings challenged show. Sadly for fans, we know how that ended.

The return of Sarah Michelle Gellar (just a child compared to Heather and I) in Ringer was certainly hoped to draw some Buffy-like ratings magic. Sadly, that's going to end in the same result. Ringer is likely to be canceled at the end of this season

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did the CW's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

The CW executive vice president Thom Sherman says the network hopes to potentially launch The Selection (adapted for TV by Angel alums Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain) off of Hunger Games mania, much like The Vampire Diaries got a boost from the Twilight phenomenon. “From what we’ve heard, this is the next book series that will capture everyone’s imagination,” Sherman says.

That’s where the buzz surrounding The Hunger Games helped. “It’s funny, two years ago I didn’t think about it this way,” Roth says. “It’s a happy circumstance.” The Selection, which shot its pilot in Vancouver, still has to make that final hurdle: Landing a slot on The CW’s fall schedule. That lineup is crowded with contenders, including hot pilots Arrow (based on DC Comics’ Green Arrow) and The Carrie Diaries.

    @Ginger

Wow, great commentary. I’m really hoping that my favorite shows, Ringer and Nikita, can get a 13 episode order for next season, but I know the chances are very low. And I also believe that they must be dissapointed with TSC’s recent ratings, but isn’t the 8 p.m. hour more competitive on Thursdays because of TBBT? And if TSC keeps pulling out a 0.6 rating, or even worse, a 0.5, after an all new TVD then there’s no way it can hold onto decent ratings in a new timeslot. This year, unfortunately, the CW will cancel either Ringer, Nikita, HOD or maybe even all three of them. Too bad, the first two just got even awesome every week.

  • Kyle

I strongly believe that Arrow is sure to be picked up. the CW is looking for a show like that since Smallville concluded a year ago.

The girlier elements of “The Hunger Games” – Katniss undergoing a makeover to try to win popular support and finding herself torn between two brave, sensitive boys – are almost lost amid the surprising bloodshed. “The Selection” focuses more on its Cinderella story. It has its violence, though America isn’t dishing it out, Katniss-style: The kingdom where she competes to win over Prince Maxon is under attack by rebels.

That lighter touch may help “The Selection” score with the CW’s target audience, women 18-34, after a rough season for the network. Almost every returning drama is either down or flat in the ratings, both in the 18-34 demographic and the 18-49 demo most prized by advertisers. The only returning show that is up, “One Tree Hill,” has aired its last episode.

There are lots of articles on different news sites about “The Selection” today. CW Marketing Department at work :) I think they have started the promotions early :)

  • SmG

Also in all of these Selection articles, there is a mention of other cw pilots and all of them says (in different wording) Arrow and Carrie Diaries will most probably get picked up with Selection.

  • damien

90210 is the strongest of it’s teen dramas, so it’ll be picked up. Plus, it’ll hit 100 episodes next season and give CBS Studios and Warner Brothers that syndication money it craves

syndication?…i really doubt 90210 will make a lot of money in reruns in america..maybe soapnet will pick it up and overseas

  • Stacy

But I LOVE Ringer!!! Everyone I talk to who watches it loves it, too!

  • Kate

With ANOTHER .4 Ringer is dead. It should be downgraded to one face next week.

  • Julio

So sad for Ringer… Amazing episode last night.. I wish for there to be a renewal but that’s too late. I do not know why cw places its shows in such long hiatus, they all drop when they come back.. so dumb. Ringer imo should be given another chance, just like MP should have 2 yrs ago. I’m worried that Tue new president will only do shows like gg.. all their pilots look unpromising… Rip Ringer and Nikita.. two descent shows on this crappy channel…
Ps. TSC should not be safe, how can a show that has the best lead in of the night as well as least competition only gea .6 and lose gg ratings in viewers?? Pathetic… Should be cancelled and not place on Fri to where it will get a .1-.2 rating!!

  • Natalia

Ringer won TV Guides Guilty Pleasure of the year and CBS is tweeting about it. Good to know, CBS still likes the show. Now for CW to tweet….

  • Natalia

Some of you are too harsh on Ringer. Ringer was not aired here in Chicago yesterday because of a Bulls Game, before Final ratings it was at a .5. CW will soon announce it was preempted anyway, so they know about it. Technically not as bad as some of you make it out to be.

    Totally agree!

  • DonnaT

    Natalia

Last year the final two episodes (shown back to back) of SPN S6 were pre-emepted in Chicago, too, and The CW knew that but never made an “announcement” nor swapped the SPN’s “finale episodes” with the SMV S10 “Final Season” 2 hour series finale. Ringer is dead (or should be); it has now received 5 “0.4″s in the Finals and as someone else said, viewers who have not kept with the series are not very likely to watch the finale next week.

  • Kate

They already air multiple seasons in the UK and Asia. Wouldn’t surprise me if Soapnet picked it up along with GG. Not to sound like our dearly departed/banned friend Mikey, but I think the studios do make a good amount of money internationally if I’m not mistaken.

I’ll be interested to see where they place TSC next year along with how it does without that nice TVD lead in it’s wasting.

  • Lauren

@Charmed You just don’t get it! GG is safe!!!!!

  • Adrian

At this point it is fairly obvious they will pick Selection, Arrow and Carrie, and Selection will get the post VD-slot. I think CW just sealed its fate with this pilots (read: it’s dead).

The Selection seems to be yet another show for teen girls and it will inevitably fail like TSC. The VD crowd is not likely to care about a teen drama since most of them seem to be older women.
I really was going to watch it but now I know it’s more Bachelor than Hunger Games I def. won’t be checking it out.

Carrie is DOA. Why would ANY SATC fan who is most likely in their 20s or 30s want to watch a show about teenagers? Schwartz and Savage (the producers) have produced flop after flop (GG, HOD etc.) Again, it’s like the CW wants to fail or something.

Arrow will probably be the only new show to get decent numbers but giving the current state of the CW I’m not holding my breath.

  • Sophia

Okay wow, you know back when Hart of Dixie was preempted, everybody seemed to say that shouldn’t make a difference. Yet with Ringer it should? Dude this is Ringer’s FIFTH 0.4, it’s not like it hasn’t seen these numbers before.

  • Doug

@EatMore: Well, with most shows on the CW now around 1.0 to 1.2 million viewers, how many adults, or any demo, do you really think are watching? The simple truth is that there are MANY more options to reach those young females on shows with higher ratings in those very demographics. If you check out the daily cable ratings, you’ll see that GG tied for 9th in its timeslot in adults 18-49, and HOD 10th. I can’t imagine what the CW is making on ads now, but I’m sure that next season it will be around 10k per 30-second spot.

The good thing for the CW is that it really can’t get much worse than it got this spring, or they won’t even rate. I mean, somebody will watch, right?

  • Freyja

I’ll laugh if they don’t pick up the selection at all. “The Bachelor meets Hunger Games” Fighting over who gets to become Queen? Yeah no thanks ;) but then again I don’t like the Bachelor either, women that desperate to fight with other women for a man. *headdesk*

The Carrie Diaries- Another one the CW shouldn’t be picking up, no one cares to see the beginning, because we all know how it ends.

The only two maybe 3 pilots I am looking forward to if they get picked up are Arrow, The Cult and Beauty and The Beast. Sounds much more interesting than The Selection and The Carrie Diaries. *Like gag me with a spoon*
