Two seasons ago I was cheered as Melrose Place brought back the lovely (and my age peer) Heather Locklear in an attempt to save the ratings challenged show. Sadly for fans, we know how that ended.

The return of Sarah Michelle Gellar (just a child compared to Heather and I) in Ringer was certainly hoped to draw some Buffy-like ratings magic. Sadly, that's going to end in the same result. Ringer is likely to be canceled at the end of this season

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did the CW's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012

  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Supernatural should definitely get renewed, it has lost some viewers, but I’m sure that none of these shows would get that kind of viewer ratings when they reach a seventh season. The Vampire Diaries may be a good show, but I don’t know if they would get any chances of having more than 2 or 3 more seasons, it depends.

    Anyway:
    Supernatural, renewed.
    The Vampire Diaries, renewed.
    The Secret Circle, renewed.
    90210, renewed.
Gossip Girl, barely renewed with a last season chance.
    Nikita, renewed.
    Hart of Dixie, canceled.
    Ringer, canceled.

CW should move Supernatural off of Fridays. I know people say ‘don’t fix what ain’t broken’ but there’s plenty of other shows that are more deserving of the death slot. Plus it’d be nice to pair up Supernatural and Arrow, just for nostalgic reasons, but it’d be stupid to start Arrow on Fridays. Also ratings drop year to year (excluding season four), and moving it off Fridays might encourage some DVR viewers to watch it live again, hopefully helping to negate some of that slip.

  • Sophia

    @Natalia:

Why does that bother you so much? Everybody here trashes Gossip Girl, certain people hate on Nikita when it’s ratings come out, same with Hart of Dixie. Now that Ringer’s ratings just came out and it got only a 0.4, people are going to hate. Shouldn’t be that big of a deal.

CW can move SPN if they want but I really hope they don’t pair ARROW with SPN. ARROW has the potential to be HUGE and pairing it with SPN would just be a waste. SPN had SMALLVILLE and TVD as a lead-in; time for it to stand on its own. I’m hoping for a bold move from CW to pair ARROW with one of their new dramas(preferably Beauty and the Beast).

  • PrettyLittleLiars

One Thing is clear : If they pick-up Shelter , I WILL NOT WATCH IT !

    @Tab L. Uno
    Yes , me too ! i really want a Ghost Whisperer/Medium Style TV-Shows.
They used to be my FAVORITE TV-SHOWS !

  • Kavyn

The pilots I’m most interested in are Arrow, Cult and First Cut. I’ll watch all the pilots but the three I posted are the only ones I see myself potentially getting into (if they focus on the show’s actual premise and not love triangles). If Selection didn’t focus on “The Bachelor” nonsense I’d probably have given it a chance.

  • Charmed

@PrettyLittleLiars and @Tab L. Uno, Me too! I loved Ghost Whisperer and Medium. I hope The CW pick up The Selection, Shelter and Cult.

    @Sid

Smallville and Supernatural pair seems to have worked very well, the previous season. What makes you think Arrow, a show similar to SV, will go waste if paired with Supernatural? BTW, SPN has been standing alone, even from its initial days. Right now it gets little promotion, aired during death slot and paired with one of the worst performing shows on network and still with decent ratings according to the network standards. It doesn’t require Arrow. I am sure there will be an audience overlap between the shows.

But, IMO, moving Supernatural to an other day is would be a wrong move by CW, because veteran shows like Supernatural are meant to be on Fridays.

  • MJWatson

the CW needs viewers. Supernatural is one of the highest rated shows, move it away from the Friday death slot!!!

    2012-2013:
    Monday:
    8 90210
    9 Gossip Girl(10-13 eps)/Cult (10-13 eps)

    Tuesday
    8 Arrow
    9 Supernatural

    Wendesday:
    8 ANTM
    9 The Selection or Shelter

    Thursday:
    8 Vampire Diaries
9 Beauty and the Beast (someone editing this tweeted it would be very ‘Twilight-like’ so perfect fit for Vampire Diaries.

    Friday:
8 Hart of Dixie or reality show
    9 The Secret Circle

  • KS

Carver has written one of my most favorite episodes – A Very Supernatural Christmas. I hope, he will pen one episode of Winchesters celebrating their birthday. Or at least a surprise mention at the beginning or end of episode.

  • Stephen

@Adrian – just how is GG a flop? It’s one of the most popular teen shows in the world, the top-selling teen show on iTunes, Netflix and has a HUGE fanbase around the world (11.5 million fans on Facebook, last I checked). Internationally it has a fanbase similar to the original 90210. The show is HUGE in the U.K, Denmark, Poland, Spain, France and Sweden. It’s HUGE in asia (they will make they’re own version) and Latin America.

  • Adrian

    @Stephen
LOL GG WAS successful in season 2. THREE years ago. Now everyone including the cast and even the fans want it to end.

And please, don’t come here with the iTunes and billion Facebook likes and international success excuses. Those mean nothing and any sane person who often posts here can tell you that.

What matters are ratings in the US and the US only and the US ratings stink, nothing but the cold, harsh truth. If GG has made it this far is because it was lucky enough that there were other shows that did worse every year and it was Ostroff’s baby and not because of iTunes or international success.

  • still good shows on tv

I think Shelter will and should be picked up.

  • Bad Wolf

I know Gossip Girl does OK – well, at least OK for the CW – on several of their key demos, but come on : everybody knows the ratings will be even more pathetic next season if Gossip Girl returns. I know the viewers numbers doesn’t matter, but a show that goes under one million viewers is still a powerful symbol of the network’s failure, isn’t it ?
The same goes for 90210, stretch it as much as you want, but neither of these two (bad) shows (I watched my first and last episode of 90210 last month, everything, from the writing to the directing and not forgetting the pathetic sets, was so cheap I was afraid my eyes would bleed) really deserve an additionnal season, which certainly is going to weaken the CW even more badly !

  • Melanie

The CW won’t be moving Supernatural to another night of the week and they won’t be moving it to 8PM. SPN is doing well – for CW standards, especially for a show in its 7th season airing on Fridays.

Right now, the dramas airing on Fridays are:

    CBS: CSI:NY at a R/C index of .57
CBS: Blue Bloods at a R/C index of .57 (renewed)
CBS: A Gifted Man at a R/C index of .45

FOX: Fringe at a R/C index of .50

NBC: Grimm at a R/C index of .91 (renewed)

The CW: Nikita at a R/C index of .69
The CW: Supernatural at a R/C index of 1.05

The CW’s problem isn’t on Fridays. Its on M T W and TH at 9. Supernatural’s R/C Index should be at @.57 of network average not 1.05.

The CW needs new shows that get better ratings – they don’t need to shuffle the deck chairs on the Titanic.

    @ Stephen

You should check your sources : I’m French and I can certify that Gossip Girl is NOTHING in my country. Here’s a French article from last summer to prove it :
    http://www.programme-tv.net/news/tv/18157-gossip-girl-adios-tf1-bonjour-nt1/

Basically, it says that TF1, the French channel which airs Gossip Girl was so disappointed with its season 2 ratings (share under 15%) that they yanked it off their schedule to send it on a cable channel called NT1. The article concludes saying that Gossip Girl can be thankful cable channels exist, otherwise it would have simply disappeared.

Smallville and Stargate SG-1, which were monster hits until their 5th and 7th season in France, ended their career on cable too because nobody was interested anymore, I can’t even tell you if the Smallville finale has aired or not. Supernatural never made it on a main channel, it began directly on cable.

I don’t know about other countries, but you can count France out of your post, if you go to France and begin talking about Gossip Girl, nobody will know what it is !

  • result

I don’t care what the “ratings” say.
Some shows require you to become invested in the characters and watch the character arc.

Keep Ringer if you can carry on with a fresh story line for more arching.
Gossip Girl just needs a clean send off, just don’t do it in a single episode.
Nikita i only watched a few episodes in season one.
HART OF DIXIE is THE SHOW! Fantastic story line, Characters that I can be invested in. Could probably do with a bit of a cleanup to sort out some cluttered story lines that haven’t lead to character development.

  • Dan

I love Ringer and want it to be renewed so bad. However, if it is renewed, I want them to do a sort of redesign. The episodes have all been great, especially the last few, but I liked the feeling of the pilot that was originally meant for CBS. It was very film noir and felt so much more gritty. I feel that The CW tried to make it fit their network more, one of their many mistakes in the initial treatment of this show.

  • Sid

CW execs/ARROW’s creator has stated many times that ARROW is NOTHING like SMALLVILLE. The character/show is very “edgy”, “real” and “grounded”. There’s no flying or shooting laser arrows or anything like what SMALLVILLE has done. He basically does great things with a bow and arrow and w/o any special super powers.

It will go to waste because:

    1. I stated that if CW wants to, they can move SPN from Fridays but they won’t, why do you ask? The reason is because SPN is a veteran drama that is outperforming most of the lineup on the most difficult night/time on network television. They have a stable show that performs well regardless of lead-in or not and its obviously already established on the night(like TVD already established on Thur @8p).

    2. With SPN not moving, that means pairing ARROW with SPN would mean they would have to ship ARROW off to Fridays. I know NBC did the whole GRIMM thing but GRIMM was predicted DOA(of course until it surprised us all).
ARROW has the potential to be HUGE for The CW of they play their cards right and with all of their problems going on Mon-Wed, don’t you think it logical for them to place ARROW in of those slots instead of wasting it on Fridays with SPN?

  • Lauren

@Adrian If it was any of the other four networks I would agree! But The CW runs at a loss and it’s the shows like Gossip Girl 90210 and SPN (more established) that make money for the network (even if it is for the short term)

This is why the next few years will be critical to the networks success. Basically they need some more “Vampire Diaries” shows which will bring in the numbers and secure the network in the long term.

They will look at every aspect of how a show is making money so I disagree, otherwise GG would have been toast years ago.
