Two seasons ago I was cheered as Melrose Place brought back the lovely (and my age peer) Heather Locklear in an attempt to save the ratings challenged show. Sadly for fans, we know how that ended.

The return of Sarah Michelle Gellar (just a child compared to Heather and I) in Ringer was certainly hoped to draw some Buffy-like ratings magic. Sadly, that's going to end in the same result. Ringer is likely to be canceled at the end of this season

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did the CW's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @BadWolf TF1 is a well established network in France. In the US it would be one of the (of the big 4) So why GG was ever expected to be a success astonishes me. It should have been aired on a channel aimed at its demographic.

    Anyway I check many of the international ITunes sites and GG is generally no 1 week after week in France. (In the short term makes money for The WB)

  • DomWinchester

    Nikita to be renewed.

  • Sid

    @KS

    I forgot to add that the perfect pair for SPN in my eyes would be mid-season drama CULT.

    I mean it hasn’t been officially picked up but CW stated many times they only want it as a mini-series(13 episodes per season) and Mark Pedowitz likes this show for some reason to resurrect the script that was written 6 years ago.

  • Devon

    If it didn’t work 6 years ago it won’t work now. There’s a reason it was put on the shelf. The plot is too convoluted for the CW. This new president sounds like a real idiot.

  • Devon

    I feel like Arrow is the only guaranteed pick up right now. Everyone seems to think Carries Diaries and The Selection will be as well but I’m not convinced.

  • Devon

    Well I hope this president is fair and logical with the pilots he choose as opposed to what’s relevant to his own interests. I can’t imagine this show performing any better than Nikita(a great show) if put in the same time slot.

  • Devon

    Oh and Josh Schwartz is an EP. No thank you. It’s crazy that I’d prefer to watch a Mark Schwahn show over Josh Schwartz.

  • Adrian

    “They will look at every aspect of how a show is making money so I disagree”

    That is turning into an urban legend. Even the #1 show would only have a few thousand downloads, and not many of the money would go to the network anyway. If GG has survived, I repeat, is because there were always shows that were lower and because it was Ostroff baby.

    The only advantage that GG has is that its currently the show with most episode after SPN and it makes more money from the Netflix/Hulu deals (more episodes=more money). That is the only reason why I think they might save it, not because of the “fans deserve a final season” or “it is #1 in iTunes” or “it is huge internationally” because it clearly isn’t.

  • Sid

    @Devon

    Trust me, I agree with NIKITA being the better show as I’m also a HUGE fan but realistically, something has to replace NIKITA if it gets cancelled and I think CULT could be it. Or NIKITA and CULT could share the slot?

  • Lauren

    The iTunes revenue is just 1 aspect of a lot of reasons why gossip girl has been renewed year after year.

    And yes as stated above the Hulu/Netflix deals have helped the CW break even this year with loses/revenue. (Agreed in the short term) but its MONEY they need.

    Any of the other 4 networks I know the above would be rubbish but it’s The CW and they 100% will renew it as I said last year.

    And I’m certain you hold no official info to suggest GG is not a hit internationally. I couldn’t even tell you if Hart Of Dixie airs here in the UK as there is just know buzz like GG on ITV2.

  • Andres

    I honestly think that Nikita will be renewed. It got the same ratings, even better, than some of the shows that air during the weekdays. I also believe that Nikita would have a greater chance of survival if it was moved to a different channel, it’s too mature of a show for The CW.

  • CrimTV

    @Adrian

    I hope Gossip Girl to get a final season but your right about the international part, in the UK there is only just over 200,000 viewers per episode while TVD get’s 700,000-800,000 which is good in the UK for a non-major channel.

  • Adrian

    Fine
    http://www.cinepremiere.com.mx/node/10216– article about how GG was canceled on Mexico because of low ratings
    http://www.fandemia.com/series-extranjeras/gossip-girl-por-que-no-ha-tenido-exito-en-espana another article about its failure in Spain
    http://teleseries.uol.com.br/smallville-assume-lugar-gossip-girl-no-horario-nobre-do-sbt/ in Portugal it was canceled on its second season and replaced with Smallville
    http://www.quotenmeter.de/cms/?p1=n&p2=48045&p3= in Germany it was cancelled for low ratings and ended up in a small channel for women
    and the article already posted about failure in France. Do you need more?

    Everyone knows iTunes means nothing, even for the Cw. I maintain my point. Its renewal has nothing to do with iTunes or international success.

  • Lauren

    I still don’t agree!!! If it was such a poor performer it would have been gone years ago. This is why I love the fact it gets this much attention even on a tv forum! Buzz Buzz Buzz

    Bring on the final season 6

    And that iTunes part was just 1 point of many Which counts towards its renewals.

  • Mrc8310

    when do we expect to hear early renewals does anybody know

  • Devon

    @Sid

    We’ll see. In my opinion Arrow is guaranteed viewers which is why it will be given Nikita’s slot. I can’t see them risking putting another new show in that slot. I don’t even think they’d give The Secret Circle that slot.

  • rune

    Yeah HOD would be a fantatic show… but solely on the minds of a tween / teen set.

  • Freyja

    I honestly think we will see some shocking renewals and cancellations this year. Like Maybe Ringer for GG or TSC instead of Nikita…

    @Mrc8310- It could come any day now till upfronts (which is in May) they didn’t do early renewals last year until the end of April. So were gonna have to wait and see.

    I also think were gonna see some not so predictable pick ups as well, like maybe a dark horse contender or some pass ups that looked like shoe-ins.

    Could be what’s holding up the whole renewal process lol

  • Adrian

    @Lauren- LOL I just proved GG is not big internationally. Maybe in China where they will make a spin-off, but that’s about it.

    And just so you know, iTunes TV shows sales they are so dismal no one is interested in the numbers.
    again here are the facts
    http://appadvice.com/appnn/2010/01/apple-unhappy-with-itunes-tv-show-sales-pushing-to-cut-prices

    but keep on telling yourself whatever you want.

  • Mrc8310

    @Freyja

    Do you think they will announces early renewals at the end of April this year again
