Two seasons ago I was cheered as Melrose Place brought back the lovely (and my age peer) Heather Locklear in an attempt to save the ratings challenged show. Sadly for fans, we know how that ended.

The return of Sarah Michelle Gellar (just a child compared to Heather and I) in Ringer was certainly hoped to draw some Buffy-like ratings magic. Sadly, that's going to end in the same result. Ringer is likely to be canceled at the end of this season

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did the CW's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@adrian The fact is none of us ordinary people know what happens inside the closed doors at The CW. (You can post as much as you like in regards to these so-called facts. I could post a twice as much back at you but I haven’t the time.

I will just calmly wait for the early renewals and look forward to a final season 6 of GG.

    UK Fan :-)

People give it a rest so what if Gossip Girl gets a renewal it might be Huge on Facebook but it does not reflect the ratings here. Some how it will still get its final season. :-/

if they ended shows like one tree hill which was like for teens and would have brought in money for them, im shore they wouldn’t have a problem cancelling 90210 and gossip girl…

  • Devon

They ended OTH because it was on the air for 9 years. You can only keep a show going for so long and according to the charts it was number 2 for the network…

  • Kate

OTH ended because the actors didn’t want to continue with it. It took A LOT to get them all to agree to even the shortened season

  • NIKITA Wont get AXED

    TSC: RENEWED
    TVD: RENEWED
    SUPERNATURAL: RENEWED
    GG: FInal season
    90210:RENEWED
    NIKITA: RENEWED
    RINGER:CANCELED
    HOD: CANCELED

  • poshreany

oh i didn’t know that about OTH, i think that 0TH went down after peyton and lucas left anyway they maybe should have ended it after they had left…

    TVD: renewed
    supernatural: renewed
nikita: renewed, for a last season
    TSC: renewed
gossip girl: renewed, but needs to be cancelled

90210: cancelled, i think it should be
    HOD: cancelled
ringer: cancelled, but hope gets renewed

    Gossip Girl question.

Why is it that since season two each season gets lower and lower ratings, in all general groups but also in specific gender groups.

Yet each year gets upfront ad rates that are some of the very best for the CW?

Even using just women 18-34 doesn’t showcase why GG does so much better then the majority of the lineup for the CW for the last 4 years.

And upfronts are only set based on ratings data. They aren’t worried about internet, overseas, physical media, merchandise, streaming, ect, ect, ect

But there is one thing that is a very big part of the ratings data and we don’t see that data.

That’s the Income Index or the measure of upscale viewers.

There are two breakdowns on this. One is a regular rating, and one is a 100% rating based on your overall total audience. And its all based on adults 18-49 or adults 18-34.

Gossip Girl which typical is one of the lowest rating shows on tv (only a few shows on the CW historically due worse, meaning it should rank on a typical week.

Ranks tied with the best percentage of its adult audience being in homes over 100,000. And pushed the show to 37th position of all shows.

Its the strongest show the CW has ever had in this index.

So for people wondering why does Gossip Girl get renewed, the real question should have been for the last few years, why is its ad rate so much higher then almost all other shows even when other show perform either statistically tied or better in the various demos and subsets.

This upscale Index has keep many a show alive longer then its adult 18-49 and adults 18-34 alone would keep you alive.

That’s why GG is still going to be a non brainer for renewal even with its low demo and rating.

And when we see up fronts for next year (and assuming that GG is renewed as is expected) I think it will continue to do better then many a show on the network.

So forget about overseas, forget about online sales or streaming (streaming is much larger then purchase, vastly larger) and forget about its poor demo’s.

The income Index is what is keeping GG for another season. And its why even though its basically tied with Hart of Dixie (in three different Demos) that there is no question between the two. With Nikita it has far better adults 18-34 and its over all larger % of upscale viewers to make it a no brainer between the two properties.

  • Brandy

Im 31 & my favorite cw shows are vd, hod, sc, gg, antm then 90210 & finally nikita.im in the target audience of w18_34 &A18_34.Im personally loving GG seasons 4&5 though most fans dont.

  • Chris

RINGER RINGER RINGER RINGER RINGER RINGER RINGER RIMGER RINGER RINGER RINGER RINGER

  • GiGi

My husband and I love Ringer. My husband usually will not watch just any show.
We have watched every episode and have been
Entertained every minute. We wish they would
give it another season. We are in our fifties.
In the past, there have been other programs that
had low ratings the first year and then climbed
    to the top.

  • Darcy

Ringer and Nikita will be cancelled. As sad as that is. I hear that Nikita is good and I personally love Ringer, but it’s all a numbers game unfortunately.

  • The Kennedy Games

Ringer was toast from day one.. Sarah took such little time for any of her fans supporting her on the net.. She rejected her fans on Buffy And now they are rejecting her on Ringer.

  • poshreany

im only 18 and my favorite show is ringer, not the teenage shows like gg and TVD… will ringer be helped since it had 1.05million views last week and 1.10million this week so it didn’t end up dropping again…

  • vic

OTH became better without LP and had good ratings. Most part of OTH was about adults not teens and I like it!

  • poshreany

i also like OTH i was making a point it was one of there popular shows and ended, and to me it was better with lucas and peyton, and its more for 16-30 and on year olds it was teens growing up into adults so does that mean once there adults its for adults to watch… so yeah teens and adults i guess… and after they left it actually kept going down it views…
