Kathy Bates, Academy Award winning star of Harry's Law, hates the fact that the people paying for broadcast primetime (the advertisers) only pay for adults 18-49 viewers. She doesn't much care for the cancellation bear, either. Her executive producer, Bill D'Elia, either doesn't understand how broadcast primetime works, or is in willful denial about it. Those squinty jillion average viewers don't pay the bills, no matter how much fans would like them to.

I'm sure that there will be plenty of entertainment media sites that will fill fans with false hope over the show's future in the coming weeks, but the knowledgeable will disregard that nonsense. Harry's Law ratings have made it certain to be canceled by the end of this season for quite some time.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did NBC's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

It’s too bad Bill Gorman has made it “his” personal quest to make sure he tells everybody this show will be cancelled. Pretty sure he said the same thing about shows like Whitney, Up all Night, Community, 30 Rock and many others…and look now where he has them…bottom line he doesn’t know anymore then the rest of us what shows will be cancelled and the producers of Harry’s Law called him out on it….and now he’s mad !!! Get over it Bill and focus on the little known facts that you do know for sure…which isn’t much !!!

About NBC – well this year The voice probably will be Number 1 show! Will beat AI! With help of post SB slot off course! So real hit not only for NBC standarts! This mean NBC is better than last year! So NBC Mondays are improving! Tuesday TBL is also strong for them! With the voice result show can go even better! So Mondays and Tuesday lets name it reality days on NBC are stong and already rebuild! With two the voice cycles will be great! Friday is also good day for their standarts! And now here we go to mess! Because Wednesday and Thursday is real mess for NBC! But let think about it! Wednesday – BEST FOX day-AI! Thursday – second best FOX day – AI and post AI slot! Thursday -best CBS day- TBBT&POI! Wednesday best ABC sitcom MF and Thursday best ABC drama-Greys! Thursday best CW show-TVD! So NBC must make their math! How can get least damage on little price or right price! Now what NBC clearly can and MUST improve is 10pm slot! They waste The voice lead-in this year! Next year the voice will be in two cycles fall-spring, great chance to promote fresh shows! I read really good analysis in huffingtonpost! I think they has 2-3 really good chances next season if not for hits for good and stable shows! I will take JJ Abrams-Kripke show (with hints of “The Hunger Games” to it- strong, young female lead) for frontrunner in the fall after the voice in monday – just best producer, good writer and star director! Most important storyline looks great! Now Hanibal already pick up with 13ep next season so for me Tuesday after the voice or TBL with best chance for second hit or good show! I think NBC will move the voice result show in 8pm! Will see! Now for the second cycle i still can’t choose! Must see at least trailers! Too similar without big names-producers, writers, directors etc. And now the big question what we make with this 10pm slots in Wednesday and Thursday! I really have NO idea! Really! I think they are just dead slots! I mean ok they will try Smash at 8pm in one of these days but i think will crash because is bad show!(thats why i think the voice lead in was waste) Than all day is dead! I think NBC is moving in right direction although wednesday will stay really bad and next year!

NBC needs to keep Harry’s Law as that’s a whole lot of viewers that NBC can be taking advantage of. Remember guys viewers build demos for the shows behind it. If they can air Chicago Fire or County behind Harry’s Law those dramas will get off to great starts.

Since people post schedules on here’s my schedule for NBC this fall:

    MON
    8:00 The Voice
    10:00 Smash

    TUE
    8:00 The Voice
    9:00 Downwardly Mobile

    WED
    8:00 Off Their Rockers
8:30 Jimmy Fallon’s new comedy Table for Three
    9:00 Whitney

Water Cooler’s schedule looks pretty good because I like what he/she did with the Tuesday and Wednesday lineups.

Bent managed somehow to drop off the list, so I’m returning it with the two points it had before.

    BENT – 0 (-2) (And eliminating it, sorry. :( )
    BEST FRIENDS FOREVER – 5
    AWAKE – 19 (+3)
ARE YOU THERE, CHELSEA? – 2
    GRIMM – 17
    30 ROCK – 18 (+2)
    UP ALL NIGHT – 10 (-1)
    PARENTHOOD – 19
    COMMUNITY – 26
    PARKS & RECREATION – 18
    LAW & ORDER SVU – 5 (+1)
    SMASH – 6 (-3)
    THE OFFICE – 6

    Eliminated:
    15. Whiney (4-11, 10:28pm)
    14. Harry’s Law (4-12, 9:44am)
    13. Bent (4-12, 5:16pm)

    “I don’t really like jokes. I don’t think they’re funny.”
-Bill Haverchuck, from Freaks and Geeks episode 1.05 “Tests and Breasts”

My Suggestion for NBC Next Season:

    Mon:
8pm The Voice / Fear Factor (January)
9pm The Voice / Midnight Sun (January)
    10pm Smash / Hannibal (January)
Keep this night together and reboot in January.

    Tues:
    8pm The Biggest Loser
    9pm: Chicago Fire (new)
Try something else after Biggest Loser.

    Wednesday:
    8pm Community (new time)
8:30 The New Normal (new comedy)
9pm Parks & Recreation (new time)
    9:30 30 Rock (new time)
    10pm Parenthood (new time)
Expand the comedy block and try something soapy.

    Thurs:
8pm Go On [staring Matthew Perry] (new)
8:30 Downwardly Mobile [Staring Roseanne & John Goodman] (new)
    9pm The Office
    9:30 Up All Night
    10pm L&O:SVU (new time)
Familiar stars might be able to salvage the former home of Must See TV. Move Law & Order SVU because nothing new has been able to hold the former ER time slot. Maybe something established can.

    Friday:
8pm Who Do You Think You Are? / Mockingbird Lane (Late October)
    9pm Grimm
    10pm Dateline
Grimm has been NBC’s lone success story. Built around it, with the Munsters reboot and have it premier late like ABC did with Once Upon a Time.

    Saturday: Repeats

    Sundays
    7pm Dateline
8pm Betty White Off Their Rockers (new 1 hour format)
    9pm Celebrity Apprentice
Expand Betty White’s show to an hour long and transplant it for an all reality Sunday.

    Summer / Midseason Replacements
    Harry’s Law (season 3)
    Whitney (season 2)
    Friday Night Dinner (new comedy)
    Guys with Kids (new comedy)
    Bad Girls (new drama)
    Revolution (new drama)

I will stay in denial until the bitter end! And the squinty eye joke has run its course. Move on, dude.

  • Steve

    @Cliff Macke

I don’t think Bill (or Robert) have personal quests for any show. Their personal quest is the belief that ratings in the 18-49 demographic is the final decision maker for the renewal or canceling of all shows. Unfortunately for those of us that like the poorly rated show such as Harry’s Law, they are right most of the time.

(Savoring the last season in which my viewing counts for something since I leave the 18-49 age range in August!)

I removed Bent. Two people voted from the same list, they both docked two points off Bent. It originally had 4, therefore it should’ve been eliminated.

They should have left Harry’s Law the way it was on the first season. All of the changes made it just another lawyer show. The original office/shoe store, along with the original cast were enjoyable; that’s what made it good in the first place.
