Kathy Bates, Academy Award winning star of Harry's Law, hates the fact that the people paying for broadcast primetime (the advertisers) only pay for adults 18-49 viewers. She doesn't much care for the cancellation bear, either. Her executive producer, Bill D'Elia, either doesn't understand how broadcast primetime works, or is in willful denial about it. Those squinty jillion average viewers don't pay the bills, no matter how much fans would like them to.

I'm sure that there will be plenty of entertainment media sites that will fill fans with false hope over the show's future in the coming weeks, but the knowledgeable will disregard that nonsense. Harry's Law ratings have made it certain to be canceled by the end of this season for quite some time.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012

  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

NBC just needs to go balls to the wall next season. No conservative moves. They need to put a stop to the slide and just go for it. What’s the use of being cautious now when the network’s audience (outside of two or three bright spots + SNF) continues to wither away?

That was the most offensive rant by TBTN I have ever read – “those squinty jillion average viewers”. Really? Who is writing for you, a teenager? Truly, for a respectable site that was offensive (by the way, I am 45 and do not “squint”). It is NBC’s highest rated drama – fact – so if they cancel it, they are insane. They put it on Sunday (and is still doing well considering) against sports and ABC’s massive hit, “Once Upon A Time”. It needs a new day/time – it’s brilliantly written, acted, produced and yes – stars Kathy Bates. If we are only going to care about demo nonsense over quality – perhaps we should just give up on scripted TV all together (or watched cable) and just let the TV rule with reality junk? – or mindless cop shows with psychics? Oh ya, can’t wait. NBC I hope is not stupid enough to cancel this one.

I wish Harry’s Law could be like Murder She Wrote. I’m guessing that Murder She Wrote brought in mostly older viewers, but I could be wrong. Anyway, it ran for what? 12 years? I do remember it being high in the ratings, though. I think Harry’s Law would just make a decent performance record to fill in the always crowded with the best shows Sunday nights. The only other thing I think NBC could do to get the demographic’s they want, is to put up another ridiculous fall on your a– non-reality show. They don’t seem to do well with scripted TV that gives them the numbers they want.

I just have to say this. Scandal and, especially Smash, were some of the worst TV shows I’ve ever seen. And I have been around a long time. Long enough to love Harry’s Law. HA!

Once Upon a Time is not a “massive hit” in fact it is now on the bubble. NBC needs to clean house as much as possible so they can try out new shows, some of which might possibly get decent ratings. The lineup they have now will never get better ratings than they currently do – shows don’t go up in ratings. Grimm is ok for Friday and Smash is a pet project of the guy in charge.

Harry’s law is one show that my husband and I both love and watch together! I think the changes they have made make the show better this season. I really hope they reconsider and keep it.

I can’t believe you would cancel one of the few shows a family can watch.
