Kathy Bates, Academy Award winning star of Harry's Law, hates the fact that the people paying for broadcast primetime (the advertisers) only pay for adults 18-49 viewers. She doesn't much care for the cancellation bear, either. Her executive producer, Bill D'Elia, either doesn't understand how broadcast primetime works, or is in willful denial about it. Those squinty jillion average viewers don't pay the bills, no matter how much fans would like them to.
I'm sure that there will be plenty of entertainment media sites that will fill fans with false hope over the show's future in the coming weeks, but the knowledgeable will disregard that nonsense. Harry's Law ratings have made it certain to be canceled by the end of this season for quite some time.
The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did NBC's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

Notes:
-
- certain to be cancelled by May, 2012 -
- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012 -
- toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012 -
- more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012 -
- certain to be renewed by May, 2012
The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).
(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I think Harry’s Law is outstanding. Unlike other Legal Shows, Harry’s Law takes constitutional issues and examines them. Sometimes, they go a bit off track, but issues such as ‘Buy American’ and ‘College Being Necessary in Today’s Economy’ touch reality. The fact that it’s set in Ohio and not New York or Los Angeles (where, everyone knows, the pillars of the world exist) is another plus. It gives the show a heartland feel with heartland concerns. Kathy Bates is outstanding, as is her supporting cast. Episodes are to the point, with a touch of humor. It’s good entertainment with a dash of education thrown in. No doubt it will be cancelled – after all, it just may be ‘too intelligent’ for most viewers out there, or at least that may be the opinion of the good folks living in Los Angeles or New York – and after all, who knows better?

The whole industry is messed up. Do I remember right, Seinfeld had crappy numbers the first year, but gained the second year. Networks are more interested in the here and now.
NBC need a complete overhaul or at the very least a few days where they have all new programming.
I say shed as much as they can-within reason and place all their current low rated shows on the same days together.

quote from The Office [2.03]:
Dwight: I have been Michael’s number two guy for about 5 years, and we make a great team. We’re like one of those classic famous teams. He’s like Mozart and I’m like… Mozart’s friend. No. I’m like Butch Cassidy and Michael is like… Mozart. You try and hurt Mozart, you’re gonna get a bullet in the head, courtesy of Butch Cassidy.
And, remember, NBC moved Harry’s Law to Sundays and it is still getting the ratings it did when it was on another night—that proves that the show has very loyal viewers!
Bill Gorman, I hope you are completely wrong so I can say “I TOLD YOU SO”

Non crazy-fan reading of Sunday HL ratings: “New night, same dreadful ratings!”
HL will be canceled. I will be here, but I’m sure you’ll be long gone, so let me say “I TOLD YOU SO” in advance.
