ABC is renewing General Hospital for one year, and canceling talk show The Revolution.  The network needed to cancel a daytime show to make room for Katie Couric's syndicated talk show Katie, which will debut on most ABC affiliates this September.

Deadline reports that "ABC was persuaded to keep General Hospital after The Revolution ratings hit record lows in March. The network is allegedly concerned both that canceling 'General Hospital" will alienate the show's fans, who threatened to boycott Katie, and that The Revolution would not be a strong lead-in for "Katie." The week of March 26, GH was watched by 2.26 million viewers, compared to 1.33 million for The Revolution." The Revolution" also performs poorly among the key Women 18-49 demographic, averaging about half of what "One Life To Live" got in the time period.

The Revolution will end its run on July 7. For the rest of the summer, it will be replaced by an afternoon version of Good Morning America tentatively titled GMA in the Afternoon until "Katie's" debut.

I’m glad GH is staying but screw the chew and I won’t be watching Katie, I miss my soaps

  • Rev and GH Fan

Too bad for The Revolution, I enjoyed watching it and the tips and exercises I learned were great. It had a lot of potential and maybe they can do something similar in the long run. I’ve loved soaps all my life, esp GH and sad to see them dwindle away, but in the end my health is more important than the same storyline day in and day out, year after year, dragged out forever. Sitting and doing nothing for years watching soaps and other lazy activities (or lack there of) contributed to where I am today…currently working hard to lose 104 lbs, only 50 more to go! Thank you to Harley, Dr. Jen, & Dr. Tiffany for the info you gave on the show, it helped me.

I pray they will not cancel GH, but I do love The Chew; refused to watch The Revolution b/c they canc. OLTL, but could not resist the characters on the Chew; Will NOT watch Katie or GMA either

I’m glad that GH was renewed and VERY glad the Revolution was cancelled. Now the CHEW is next. How can anyone watch these 5 people guzzle down the food they cook. Never watched either one and will not watch Katie. She doesn’t belong on daytime. She was on GMA for a week, why doesn’t she stay there, she doesn’t need her own show. We got screwed by Brian Frons and now since he left, ABC needs to wake up or they will be cancelling all their shows on daytime. He must be in hiding, haven’t heard anything about him. I know it’s impossible to bring back AMC & OLTL but I get to see some of the actors on different soaps while they last but it’s not the same.

I do not watch The Chew, the revolution and will not be watching Katie…if ABC cancels General Hospital, that will be it for ABC daytime tv!!!! I am sick of these talk shows and reality tv!!!!

Glad to hear GH will continue (at least for another year) even though I only watch the OLTL characters on it. I suspect that ABC needs to realize they created a “scorched earth” timeslot when they cancelled OLTL – for myself anyway, I have no intention of EVER watching ANYTHING they put into OLTL’s old time. Soap fans spoke and warned – ABC ignored us.

So sad to see such an informative great show end, very upsetting… loved it yet i do like the soaps

I think ABC is on a downward spiral to the worst ratings they’ve ever had. Who is making these Terrible decisions?

I am also happy for GH fans, but I haven’t watched that show much at all since Luke and Laura left way back when. I was only a kid, but I can remember John Stamos, Jack Wagner and many of the classic storylines.

While I watched AMC and OLTL off and on growing up and barely missed an episode in the last nearly 20 years. I still dvr the reruns on Soapnet. I was thrilled to find out The Revolution is going the way of the dodo. Now if The Chew would only go away. I won’t watch either. I won’t even have any of my tv’s on ABC during those timeslots to avoid helping their ratings.

As for those who think it’s crazy to boycott and entire network for cancelling a show or 2, why should we, as viewers, keep watching a channel that cancels good shows with alarming momentum? I’m sick of investing my time in new shows that may get cancelled after a season or even a few episodes.

Sure, the ratings may have fallen over the years a bit, but when you factor in the number of people who dvr shows and don’t watch them within 24 hours (ratings for a show don’t count if it’s been dvr’d and watched more than 24 hours after airing), it’s understandable why ratings have dropped the way they have in the last decade or so.

I hope Katie’s show flops harder than The Revolution. She’s an annoying bitch who has fallen out of favor over the years with viewers. At least give us guys some eye candy. Men don’t want to look at that tired, old piece of garbage.

I just don’t get why they couldn’t even just cut AMC and OLTL to 1/2 hour and put them on Soapnet. And WTF ever happened to porting those shows to online series?

I hope the execs who made these decisions die horribly. Yes, I know it sounds harsh, but that’s how I feel. These shows were a tradition in my family and always gave me something I could talk about and bond with my grandmother over.

Yes, I am a guy who loved his stories!

Katie will fail as well. Until the rightful show is back in the 2pm timeslot. That is OLTL. We fans warned ABC/Disney what would happen. Anything that takes the 1-3 time slots will fail. BRING BACK OUR SOAPS!!!! Say goodbye Katie…your show will fail too. We will not watch. Boycott the 1-3 time slots…show our support for the soaps.
