While the retentionistas are likely howling, a decent ratings start for Don't Trust The B---- In Apt. 23 has it debut as "likely to be renewed", but predictions based on early ratings are subject to change rapidly. Stay tuned.

Following the ratings loser Titanic special, GCB fell to a series low 1.5 adults 18-49 rating on Sunday. The trigger happy would predict it likely to be canceled now, but since it had a string of prior non-dreadful ratings, I'm not so quick to move it from a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation.

Why is Cougar Town just a "toss up" with its dreadful ratings instead of "likely to be canceled" or worse? Because of past (negative) experience, I'm keeping shows in their third seasons (even shortened ones) no lower than a "toss up" because of potential syndication related benefits.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did ABC's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Well now, PTC doesn’t like Apt. 23!? Thank you for giving me an excuse to tune in, PTC! I’m going to keep watching!

Meanwhile, REVENGE IS BACK TOMORROW!!! I hope the next six episodes (all straight through) will continue to deliver the same quality as the rest of the season, which has been fantastic so far. I wish ABC luck tomorrow.

The Bachelor- forgot. Only way Duets can air is if it has a 10 episode season.

I still wouldn’t absolutely count out Cougar Town. ABC could renew it for a 22-23 episode season to get it over 80 episodes, and theoretically send it to syndication. It could very well be a burn off, even Thursdays at 8pm (back to back), where it probably wouldn’t perform any worse than anything ABC has aired there this season. I bet the bean counters at ABC are doing a lot of calculations to see if financing the extra season would be worth it.

  • Doug

To add – I’m starting to like the idea of airing DWTS on Sundays from 8-10pm, but then you also risk moving OUAT when it has gained a fair amount of traction on the night.

  • Ginger

    7:00 – AFV
    8:00 – Once Upon a Time
    9:00 – 666 Park Ave. (new drama)
    10:00 – GCB
GCB hasn’t caught fire like Housewives or Grey’s did, but Brothers & Sisters grew into a stable show. Pan Am proved how low the time period could go, so I can see ABC giving it a 13 episode order. 666 Park Avenue seems like it’s got fantasy and soap elements that could bridge the gap between Once and GCB. (Plus Housewife Vanessa Williams is in it.)

    8:00 – Dancing with the Stars/The Bachelor
    10:00 – Castle
    One night unchanged for stability.

8:00 – Dancing with the Stars: Results / Wipeout OR Shark Tank
9:00 – Last Man Standing (new time)
9:30 – Malibu Country (new comedy)
10:00 – Happy Endings (new time)
    10:30 – Apartment 23 (new time)
Move Dancing up, fill in the spot with reality when needed, slide Tim Allen back, add Reba, and relocate your young adult comedies. Hoping for pre DWTS results tune in has not helped any comedy.

    8:00 – The Middle
    8:30 – Suburgatory
    9:00 – Modern Family
9:30 – The Family Trap (new comedy)
10:00 – Devious Maids (new drama)
New family comedy and new soap because Revenge is being relocated because something will need to take over Grey’s if ABC doesn’t want its Thursday ratings to implode.

    8:00 – Scandal (new time)
    9:00 – Gray’s Anatomy
    10:00 – Revenge (new time)
Prep Revenge to take over Grey’s and relocate Scandal to earlier in the night.

8:00 – Counter Culture (new comedy)
8:30 – The Smart One (new comedy)
9:00 – Private Practice (new time)
    10:00 – 20/20
ABC has ordered so many comedies, one can only assume they’re expanding their comedy block, so why now venture out to Fridays for some TGIF nostalgia? Give Private Practice a farewell season. Depending on how well or bad it does will determine if if 13 or 22. End the evening with the old staple of 20/20.

    Backup Shows:
    Mistresses (new drama)
    Gilded Lilys (new drama)

    The Manzanis (new comedy)
    Red Van Man (new comedy)
and/or possibly Cougar Town (season 4)

Primetime: What Would You Do (specials)

@Fred I think Zooey is the worst thing about New Girl. The script and the guys make me watch, her over acting is horrible to behold.

    I’m worried for Private Practice.

  • Max

I know what ABC shows will come back or won’t come back for the 2012-13 season:

Renewed: Cougar Town (or Toss Up), Castle, Last Man Standing, Private Practice, Happy Endings, Revenge, Suburgatory, The Middle, Don’t Trust B in Apt 23, Once Upon A Time, Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family

    Toss Up: GCB (or cancelled)

    Cancelled: Scandal, Body of Proof

Desperate Housewives – we will miss you

I know what ABC shows will come back or won’t come back for the 2012-13 season:
RENEWED: COUGAR TOWN (OR TOSS-UP), Castle, Last Man Standing, Private Practice, Happy Endings, Revenge, Suburgatory, The Middle, Don’t Trust B in Apt 23, Once Upon A Time, Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family

    Toss Up: GCB (or cancelled)

Cancelled: Scandal (or toss-up), Body of Proof (or Toss-up)

Desperate Housewives – we will miss you

I sure hope CT can be renewed…it’s one of my favorites. ABC Studios owns it. But I’m mentally preparing for it to be gone after May 15th. I own the first two seasons on dvd already and will get the third when it comes out, so in a way it’s already in syndication in my house, lol.

Hoping for it and these to be renewed: Castle, OUAT, GCB, The Middle, MF, LMS (but if it doesn’t return I won’t miss it – it’s good for some chuckles though, and it’s nice they have a lot of the same crew from Home Improvement), HE and Apt 23. It’s nice Robert Forster is playing Tim Allen’s dad on LMS…he was in his second episode last night. He was underused in Alcatraz on Fox (as the uncle bartender).

    @ Doug

I bet the bean counters at ABC are asking each other which one has the calculator.

ABC does not know its’ 123’s. While ABC’s daytime has number crunched the soaps and Regis Philbin out (and I predict Barbara Walters out by the end of the year), ABC primetime is scattered with wasteful spending and leftover rollover episodes. I will let you in on a little secret. The millionaires on Secret Millionaire have not offered ABC any financial advice because their first piece of advice would have been don’t pick up Secret Millionaire last May if you are not going to air a single episode.

    Leftover/Rollover or Unaired
Secret Millionaire – will air in the summer
Body of Proof – 3 episodes rolled over to 2011/2012
Happy Endings – 1 episode burned off in summer, 1 episode left over from this season
Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23 – 6 episode leftover heading into the summer
Mr. Sunshine – 4 unaired episodes
    Charlie’s Angels – 1 unaired episode
Work It – 3 unaired episodes
Man Up – 5 unaired episodes
The Whole Truth – 7 unaired episodes
My Generation – 6 unaired episodes
Million Dollar Mind Game – aired on weekend afternoons this past season
Titanic – premiered on a Saturday night

ABC already did their calculations for Cougar Town and they reduced its episode order from 22 to 15.

    CASTLE – 24 (+3)
    REVENGE – 22 (-1)
    THE MIDDLE – 22 (+2)

    APARTMENT 23 – 18 (-3)

    APARTMENT 23 – 16 (-2)

Now thinking about it, I too am liking the idea of DWTS moving to Sundays. Sundays have become so weak that ABC can easily dominate the night minus football of course. Honestly, after last nights trainwreck of ratings, I don’t know what ABC will do.
